Duana Names: Name News and Issues

The name thing is not a perfect science. But it’s a single decision that lasts the rest of someone’s life so it is kind of amazing that it works out as often as it does. There are hiccups though, and a couple of them have been in the zeitgeist lately, so I wanted to rant at them today, not solving a particular letter writer’s problem, although many of you have written about all of these. Full Article

Duana Name: On Secrets, syllables, and extra Ns

Duana Posted by Duana at November 30, 2015 20:52:03 November 30, 2015 20:52:03

Hi Duana! My husband and I are having our first baby at the end of this year, and we don’t know the sex. When I first suggested Eamon as a boy name, I did not think my husband would be on board, but he loved it! We thought we were set on boy names, but of course, a lot people have asked what our potential baby names are and in many cases, we shared (big mistake). Full Article

Dear Duana, I am expecting a daughter in December. I already have a four year old son named Linus Nin Lum (whose middle name is in honor of a deceased great grandfather). My husband and I are thinking of naming our daughter Linnea Jane Lum (her middle name would be in honor of a deceased grandmother). Full Article

Duana Names: I’m With The Kid

Hi Duana, I’m due with my second child on December 2 and we decided, as we did with our son, to keep the sex a surprise. My three year old is Gavin and it’s a name I loved forever – we settled on it before I was out of the first trimester. The problem is, it seems to be the only boy name I like. Full Article

Duana Names: State of Grace

Duana Posted by Duana at November 23, 2015 19:31:06 November 23, 2015 19:31:06

Our last name is a traditional English name, 3 syllables. We had originally chosen the name Olivia Grace as we thought it sounded great with our last name and could picture both a little girl and a grown woman easily going by this name. My bubble was burst however when I realized just how popular the name Olivia is these days. Full Article

Duana Names: It Doesn’t Make you Crazy

Duana Posted by Duana at November 20, 2015 19:37:40 November 20, 2015 19:37:40

Hi Duana, I am writing you to ask for some help. I am originally born and raise in a spanish speaking country but have lived for the past ten years in the US where I met my english speaker husband and future dad of our baby who will join us this November (sex unknown). We are having a little bit of a hard time coming up with names that both reflect my hispanic culture but are easy to pronounce in English. Full Article

Duana Names: Yes, Asterisk

Duana Posted by Duana at November 18, 2015 21:40:26 November 18, 2015 21:40:26

Hi Duana, I don't plan to have children, so this email is purely for fun debate. Can you name your kid Illya if you don't have any ties to Russia, but really like the name? Can you use the name Ari if you're a gentile? Can you have a Declan if you don't have a drop of Irish blood? For the record, I think the answer to all of these questions is yes, but if I was a potential parent, I might be a bit nervous to take the plunge. Full Article

Duana Names: A Million Little Liams…

Duana Posted by Duana at November 16, 2015 20:35:27 November 16, 2015 20:35:27

I am due with my 2nd baby mid-November and the gender is a surprise. I read your baby names column obsessively as I am stuck on both a boy and a girl name.  I do not want my kid to be one of a million little Liams, Ethans or Emmas in the class and I agree that the younger sibling’s name shouldn’t be a drastic difference from the older sibling’s name. Full Article

Duana Names: The Third Gets Four

Duana Posted by Duana at November 13, 2015 19:40:44 November 13, 2015 19:40:44

Hi Duana, We were somewhat surprised to learn that we will be having a third baby. As we have a boy and a girl already, we are really struggling with a name. Keeping up with the "surprise" theme of this baby, we have opted not to find out the gender so need suggestions for both. We have a three- syllable hyphenated last name for our children, so have opted for short (1 or 2 syllable) names for our other children, both which happen to be four letters. Full Article

Duana Names: You-know-who goes up the hill

Duana Posted by Duana at November 11, 2015 20:23:27 November 11, 2015 20:23:27

Hi Duana, Equally as excited and exasperated to need your help! I'm a longtime reader, and I have a name-nerdy passion that stems from having my own unique name: my parents started 'Riley' for girls long before it was trendy. I was the only one with my name in my high school, and the only female with my name in my town. Full Article

Duana Names: Loyal Best Friend or Leading Character?

Duana Posted by Duana at November 9, 2015 19:25:36 November 9, 2015 19:25:36

Hi D, Long time fan of the blog and your column here, and I can finally use (and need!) your help. We are expecting a boy due at the end of November. We like old names that will travel well between English, Spanish and French as we are Spanish speakers but live in an international city and we will continue to do so for a while. Full Article
