Hey Duana! I know this falls out of your usual spectrum of Name Nerding, and I feel silly even asking this because worrying about naming your blog is so 2003, but... I want to write about my opinions on movies (why they matter to me, why they work, parallels, reviews, just movie nerdery). Ideally I would even like it if people read it and took me seriously. Full Article

Hi Duana, My husband and I are expecting our first boy next year and need help with a name.  We want something unique but not completely off the wall.  Our daughter’s name is Chandler (we usually call her Chani) and our last name is two-syllable beginning with a hard “C.”  My husband also has a daughter named Kayla from a previous relationship. Full Article

Duana Names: Don’t Fear The Vowel

Hi Duana, My husband and I are having our first child this winter and I am stressing about names. My husband's last name is very Italian, filled with lots of M's and r's and syllables. Many of my longtime favorite names for girls (Zara, Cecelia) are either filled with those same letters or sound too long and cumbersome when combined with the last name. Full Article

Hi Duana! I too have a general name nerd question. Would you advise expectant parents to research their options before settling on chosen names? I googled the first and middle name of a coworker's newborn daughter because it just sounded familiar to me in a maybe-famous kind of way. Turns out little Samantha Ryan F----- (last name is one-syllable, German, vowel-heavy; not that it's relevant) shares her first and middle name with a porn star. Full Article

Duana Names: What Does It Mean?

This is more of a general name nerd question - what is your feeling on the meaning of names? Do you think it's important? Does giving a child a name with a negative meaning equal bad karma?? --------- This is a great question, because people really, really have differing opinions on it and it’s hard for one side to talk to the other, like we’re in slightly different name languages. Full Article

My sister and her husband have always been torn on the last name of their children. They are both very attached to their names and families and want that reflected in their children. They had a boy in 2013 and a girl is due in December. For their son, my sister compromised by having her last name as a middle name and her husband's as a last name. Full Article

Hi Duana, I hope you can help. I've recently signed up for a Fresh Meat Bootcamp hosted by the local roller derby. I've always thought roller derby looked really fun and cool, and would be quite the physical challenge since I'd never roller skated before … and am almost 40. Full Article

Duana, please help!? My spouse and I are expecting our first child, a boy, in October. His family is German/Dutch and mine is German/British. The only thing we have agreed on is that we both would like to go the German route as our heritage is a big part of both our families. The family names are not options (Peter (baby would be the third), Anthonus, Lawrence (3 Rence's), and Adolf (for obvious reasons). Full Article

Duana, The other day one of my girlfriends and I were talking about baby names and she was telling me that she is having a lot of trouble coming up with names. I absolutely love reading all of your posts and thought who could be better to ask than you! She is pregnant with her 2nd and not sure if she is having a girl or a boy. Full Article

Hi Duana, So you'll probably want to punch me in the face over this.  I kind of want to punch myself in the face.  After some fertility challenges, we are proud parents to Charlotte (Lotte).  (I know how you feel about that but don't trash me because I love the name.) We are expecting baby #2, which should be the best news in the world considering the challenges we've had and simply because we love being parents. Full Article
