Duana Names: 80s revival?

Duana Posted by Duana at November 17, 2014 16:20:57 November 17, 2014 16:20:57

Hi Duana, I just discovered your Name Nerd blog, and just in time too! I'm pregnant with our second child, due in November. We have a 15 month old son named Pearce. Our last name is Allen, which is super mainstream, so it's important to us to choose first names that are memorable. Our style is short and sweet (max 2 syllables). Full Article

Hi Duana, I'm expecting a baby soon and mine and my husband's number one pick for a boy is Wyatt, only now I'm starting to notice it more and more... a co-worker's friend named their son Wyatt, and of course Ashton and Mila now have their little girl, etc. etc. I thought I could snag the name before it became the next Sophia or Isabella, but now I'm worried. Full Article

Duana Names: Asian, English, and Irish

Duana Posted by Duana at November 12, 2014 18:17:38 November 12, 2014 18:17:38

Dear Duana, I need some help finding names for my second born - a son due early next year. My oldest is called Keira and our surname is a short one syllable Irish name beginning with T. Apart from liking the name, one of the main reasons we selected Keira was because I am from an Asian background and the name 'Kiren' is an an Asian name. Full Article

I've been wondering this for a while, and with the spate of celebrity babies born recently it's really been niggling at me - are we SURE the names announced are legit? This isn't a reaction to "those crazy celebrities and their weird baby names", but rather wondering if, rather than revealing the child's real name to the world, "those crazy celebrities" are seeking some privacy - and secretly snickering about fooling us - by announcing fake names. Full Article

Hi Duana, I am obsessed with your column and even more now since I am expecting a little girl in December-due date is 12/31! So my problem is I LOVE the name Olivia...and so does my fiance. Like he would name her that and be done with the name game. I love it, too, but there is something holding me back from committing 100% and I think it's because I have a great name (well I think so). Full Article

Duana Names: If she were a girl

Duana Posted by Duana at November 3, 2014 19:07:01 November 3, 2014 19:07:01

Duana, We are expected our first child in December and are not finding out the gender.  Francesca is picked out if the baby is a girl. Even if we have a boy now any future girl would still get Francesca. This is family name after an Aunt and she's very, very dear to me. I think the name is beautiful and strong and translates well into English use and is different enough from other girl names ending in "a". Full Article

Duana Names: Greek to Me

Duana Posted by Duana at October 31, 2014 19:18:02 October 31, 2014 19:18:02

Hi Duana, We are expecting a girl very soon and she will be a sister to our first daughter Eleni (we are Greek-American). Because we chose such a Greek sounding name for our first I feel that we need to do the same for our second - Eleni and Harper don’t really work together. I also like the idea of keeping a Greek naming tradition. Full Article

Hi Duana, My very best friend is due at the beginning of next month, and they don't know what they're having. If it's a girl, it will be a beautiful, classic, but not too common name that you've brought up occasionally on the blog. The problem is the boy. They can't agree on a name, her husband is quite opinionated when it comes to boy names, and she seems to have "settled" on the one she hates the least. Full Article

Duana Names: A Sib for Cy

Duana, My husband and I are expecting our first child together-a girl-in a couple of months.  I have a son, Cyrus William, from a previous relationship.  We both love the name Sybil (LOVE), but the big concern is the matchiness of Cyrus/Sybil.  Other names on our list include Cecily, Josephine, Sylvie (Sy again. Full Article

Duana Names: Whither Hipster Names?

Duana Posted by Duana at October 22, 2014 18:54:26 October 22, 2014 18:54:26

Hi Duana, My husband and I are expecting our second child in a few months, and we haven't found out the sex yet - if it's a boy, we're all set. For a girl, we both really love the name Wren, but it keeps popping up on these stupid "Hipster Baby Names" and "Names For Girls That Are Trendier Than You Think" lists. Full Article

Hi Duana, So I am in a bit of a conundrum. I feel like I really don't know what to do.  I need some sage advice-stat-! A very close friend of mine just had her second baby girl.  When she was pregnant we discussed name possibilities at great length.  She always loved one name in particular and was talked out of using it by her husband when their first daughter was born. Full Article
