Hi Duana, I hope you're well! Sorry for the strange title, but I hope this email explains it all. My husband is white and I'm black and we're trying for our first baby. There's nothing immediate, but we've been talking a lot about names. We have a boy's name picked out but are struggling with a girl's name. Full Article

Hi Duana, We're expecting our second child in October and have started thinking of names. Our first child is Ethan Patrick, which we chose based off of family names. I realize with Ethan coming in on several Top 10 baby lists that it's also probably considered "vanilla" and "common. Full Article

Hi Duana! I'm writing on behalf of my best friend (with her knowledge. No shadiness involved!). She and her husband are having kid #4, a boy, and she is PISSED about it. She had incredible plans for this year involving exercise, self-improvement and further study, and her husband's penis has dicked them all up for her. Full Article

Hi Duana, I’m due with my second daughter at the end of September. When it came time to naming our first daughter, we came to a decision pretty quickly. Her name is Milana but goes by Mila – a name we both loved and still love – and her middle name is after my grandmother, Amuri (a Maori name). Full Article

Duana Names: What Do You Do With An Unnamed Baby?

Duana Posted by Duana at September 16, 2016 20:02:51 September 16, 2016 20:02:51

Dear Duana, Ok, so I probably shouldn't have left writing to you down to the wire but I hadn't made up my mind about my shortlist and Lo and behold, the baby arrived. We've narrowed down to two names. I am Chinese, and I feel like Maisie has a more Asian feel to the name. Full Article

Here's the lowdown. My husband and I are expecting our first in's sex to be revealed in the delivery room. I just got back from vacation where I devoured your book and decided it's time to start getting serious about name selection. Up until this point I thought something would just 'come to me', but so far I'm struggling. Full Article

Hi there, When I was pregnant with my twins a couple years ago, I always wanted to write to you for naming advice, but I was way to overwhelmed to ever accomplish that goal. Now my sister is pregnant with her second child (a girl!) in September and we were talking about names over the weekend and I thought of you. Full Article

Dear Duana, It's taken me a long time to write this letter because every time I read the column about names it brings back very painful memories. At the time of her birth, her biological father and I were on the fritz but just trying to make it over the finish line of her arrival. I didn't realize how done he was until the baby came out. Full Article

Duana Names: We’re In Deep

Duana Posted by Duana at September 7, 2016 21:19:26 September 7, 2016 21:19:26

Duana! My sister is having her first baby in September, and we need your help. We are obsessed with names, and have been discussing this for years. I have a spreadsheet... We're in deep. We both grew up with unusual names for the time, which I think has made this so important. My mom, a Susan born in 1955, channeled her frustration at being one of 50 Susans she knew into picking some pretty great names for us. Full Article

Duana Names: Beach Baby Updates

Duana Posted by Duana at September 2, 2016 18:55:01 September 2, 2016 18:55:01

It's the very last Friday of the summer and I'm in full denial because I feel like we don't actually remember how to do summer until we're more than halfway through it. It's something that is partly a Canadian failing and partly entirely on me. I mean, I was contemplating buying a bathing suit yesterday. Full Article

Hi Duana, My husband and I are expecting our first child in March! Still a ways to go but I think we have decided on the name. What do you think of Coco? It has family significance, as it was the nick name of a beloved relative. That relative was a male, so while it is normally used for girls, I have always found it to be a gender neutral name. Full Article
