Duana Posted by Duana at September 16, 2016 20:02:51 September 16, 2016 20:02:51

Dear Duana, Ok, so I probably shouldn't have left writing to you down to the wire but I hadn't made up my mind about my shortlist and Lo and behold, the baby arrived. We've narrowed down to two names. I am Chinese, and I feel like Maisie has a more Asian feel to the name. Full Article

Here's the lowdown. My husband and I are expecting our first in's sex to be revealed in the delivery room. I just got back from vacation where I devoured your book and decided it's time to start getting serious about name selection. Up until this point I thought something would just 'come to me', but so far I'm struggling. Full Article

Hi there, When I was pregnant with my twins a couple years ago, I always wanted to write to you for naming advice, but I was way to overwhelmed to ever accomplish that goal. Now my sister is pregnant with her second child (a girl!) in September and we were talking about names over the weekend and I thought of you. Full Article

Dear Duana, It's taken me a long time to write this letter because every time I read the column about names it brings back very painful memories. At the time of her birth, her biological father and I were on the fritz but just trying to make it over the finish line of her arrival. I didn't realize how done he was until the baby came out. Full Article

Duana Names: We’re In Deep

Duana Posted by Duana at September 7, 2016 21:19:26 September 7, 2016 21:19:26

Duana! My sister is having her first baby in September, and we need your help. We are obsessed with names, and have been discussing this for years. I have a spreadsheet... We're in deep. We both grew up with unusual names for the time, which I think has made this so important. My mom, a Susan born in 1955, channeled her frustration at being one of 50 Susans she knew into picking some pretty great names for us. Full Article

Duana Names: Beach Baby Updates

It's the very last Friday of the summer and I'm in full denial because I feel like we don't actually remember how to do summer until we're more than halfway through it. It's something that is partly a Canadian failing and partly entirely on me. I mean, I was contemplating buying a bathing suit yesterday. Full Article

Hi Duana, My husband and I are expecting our first child in March! Still a ways to go but I think we have decided on the name. What do you think of Coco? It has family significance, as it was the nick name of a beloved relative. That relative was a male, so while it is normally used for girls, I have always found it to be a gender neutral name. Full Article

Duana Names: On Femininity, Frenchness, and Farting Rats

Hi Duana! I am French, not pregnant and not intending to be anytime soon, but I like to read your column about name nerding as the cultural differences are always interesting to me. I particularly enjoyed the last one (that I've read, at least) about Vivianne, Vivienne, Vivian, etc. (link) I am writing about a very good friend of mine who is 5 months pregnant with her first child. Full Article

Hi Duana, I love your name columns and have read them for fun, with no naming intentions for a while. My husband and I are finally expecting and we're overjoyed to find out it is boy/girl twins. We're due in August and have a list of girl names we like (favourites are Alienna, Vera, Isla), but we're absolutely stuck on boy names. Full Article

Duana Names: Short. Sweet. Not Simple.

Hi Duana, After reading your Name Nerd column today, I decided to write in. I'm expecting a baby girl in August- she is our 3rd, and first girl. My husband and I had no problems naming our sons, Jack and Sam. I know these names aren't unique, but I'm fine with it- I love them both. Full Article

Duana Names: Correct Me If I’m Wrong…

Duana Posted by Duana at August 19, 2016 19:50:21 August 19, 2016 19:50:21

Hi Duana, My husband and I are at odds about how to spell the nickname of our son Julian. My husband is from England and says Jools is the correct spelling and that Jules is the feminine version. I think that it doesn't come as naturally (especially as we live in Canada) and prefer Jules. Full Article
