Neptune’s Second Chances

Okay, so Veronica Mars, right?  If you’re one of those people who’s just heard about the movie like it’s so much noise, and is kind of rolling your eyes and maybe your Entertainment Weekly subscription is rolling in and you’re like “This on the cover?”, I have to tell you that you may be on the wrong side of history. Full Story

Tom Hardy was at the BAFTAs yesterday. His date: Kelly Marcel. Hardy and Marcel have known each other for years. They collaborate on an acting workshop together. She’s a writer and apparently his “skribe” tattoo is in her honour. Is it weird that he went with her instead of with fiancée Charlotte Riley? Well, considering that she’s listed as a nominee for Saving Mr Banks in the Outstanding Best Film category, it’s not a stretch to believe that he was there to support his friend. Full Story

Johnny Depp: a musician and makeup

Johnny Depp was honoured with the Distinguished Artisan Award at the Annual Makeup Artist and Hair Stylists Guild Awards the other night. This is no surprise. For years he’s taken roles that camouflage his face. No other actor has more claim to this recognition than he does. Before taking the stage, a montage of many of his made-up roles was played for the audience. Full Story

Chiwetel > Leo

Matthew McConaughey was not a factor in the Best Actor category at the BAFTAs. So it was Chiwetel Ejiofor vs Leonardo DiCaprio. Chiwetel won. And I wish he could win at the Oscars on March 2. Because as I’ve already said and will repeat again: Matthew McConaughey in Dallas Buyers Club is basically Matthew McConaughey in How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days, just 40 lbs lighter. Full Story

That’s not what inertia means

Girls Season 3 Episode 7 recap Girls, can you stop getting me to like you? That was not supposed to be my thing, okay? Remember back in the day, when you were trite and I was crotchety? This was your best episode ever, okay? Is that condescending of me? Girls wastes no time this week pointing out that it owes a debt – that it’s happy to pay, to overextend the metaphor – to Sex And The City, which only had a few episodes in the Hamptons, really, but felt like it was there every episode. Full Story

Courteney Cox, her daughter Coco, and her boyfriend Johnny McDaid were sighted at LAX on Valentine’s Day. They ended up in Venice. Does he remind you of Stephen Moyer, a little? A hybrid of Stephens, actually: Moyer and Huvane. It’s been 3 months for Courteney and Johnny, at least that we know of. Full Story

Lupita’s BAFTA green

Lupita Nyong’o did not win the BAFTA for Best Supporting Actress. The British decided to honour Jennifer Lawrence instead. So even though Lupita’s been cleaning up for weeks, it might not be the sure thing they keep saying it is at the Oscars. If I had a ballot that counted, my vote would go to Lupita, obviously. Full Story

The most unusual book that is one of my favourites involves a boy and his favourite major-league baseball player. Yes, you are reading a Duana article. It’s called Last Days of Summer and most people have never heard of it, but basically: Joey, age 12, is having a hard time during WW II. One day this third-baseman shows up to talk to Joey’s bullies, and what follows is one of the best buddy comedies I’ve ever read. Full Story

Ellen Page comes out

I first met Ellen Page at Sundance. She was there for a film called An American Crime, the true story of a teen girl who was abused at the hands of her guardian and then locked in the basement. Page was very fragile at the festival. She couldn’t get the character out of her head. She’s naturally very small and, at this point in her career, she was also very, very thin. Full Story

The Walking Dead Season 4 Episode 10 recap We need to talk about Lizzie. At one point in this episode, I was legit worried she was going to murder Baby Judith and then cook and eat her. Judith is, indeed, alive, scooped up by Lizzie and Mika on their way out of the prison, which is a total cop out. Full Story

It’s like how they time a horse race for a powerful thoroughbred. You have to restrain the beast through the early parts of the track, and then at the right moment, you let him go. Oscar voting is in its final stretch. And now the Brange is turning it on, together. Here they are, badass in matching tuxes – she’s more badass than he is, right? – at the BAFTAs last night representing 12 Years A Slave which won Best Film but also shared some momentum with Gravity. Full Story
