Monster Trucks is a disaster at every turn

Last fall Viacom took a $115 million write-down for an unnamed Paramount movie, but everyone made the leap that Movie X was Monster Trucks, the long-delayed would-be kiddie franchise meant to sell toys. Paramount has the rights to Transformers, but they have to share those profits, including merchandising, with toy manufacturer Hasbro, so they sought to create an original property they could control top to bottom. Full Story

Following The Visit, M. Night Shyamalan continues his return to form with Split. It’s his second collaboration with Blumhouse Pictures, and where in The Visit there is discernable friction between Shyamalan’s impulse to go big and Blumhouse’s frugal, lo-fi approach to filmmaking, in Split there is no such tension as Shyamalan combines the best of his cinematic trickery with a more grounded technical approach that keeps him honest as a storyteller. Full Story

At the end of last year, January 17, 2017 was marked on the gossip calendar as a potentially big day. A World War Brange court hearing was scheduled for that day. Johnny Depp was named Favourite Movie Icon last night at the People’s Choice Awards. Johnny had a couple of major releases in 2016 – Alice Through The Looking Glass, which was critically panned and did not do well at the box office, and Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them which… wasn’t really about him anyway, at least not this time. Full Story
