A Mighty Heart

They were here today for A Mighty Heart – the screening took place at 10:45am following by a photo call and then a press conference at 1pm. About the film - very well received, with some comparing Michael Winterbottom’s direction to Michael Mann’s: tightly shot with a journalist’s eye, almost like a reality show without the fake. Full Story

Dear Gossips,

Only been the first weekend in Cannes and a permanent hangover already. Every evening begins at midnight and ends well after dawn…

But last night was the best. Last night was the U2 mini-concert on the steps of the Palais – Bono and the Boys live, blaring out onto the street…kicks Britney’s tragic lipsync up the arse. Can she sing??? At all???

Sorry…I digress. How insulting to U2 to have to be interrupted, especially by her.

So it was the premiere of the band’s concert doc called u2 3D, hugest crowd yet gathered outside at 1am and hitting up the bars afterwards.

Then it was over to the Hotel du Cap for the Vanity Fair party which is where my Leo held court in low key fashion with Jude Law’s new wingman James Blunt who, for reasons that have escaped me, can’t seem to keep the girls off his jock. Ew. And Mischa Barton was there too, having just signed on to the upcoming St Trinian’s alongside Colin Firth, Emily Watson, and Rupert Everett ….WTF?

No ….seriously ….among people who can actually act, how the hell is she going to keep up?

Five days down and many more to come – Cannes really heats up this week with everyone on pins and needles for the arrival of George Clooney and the Oceans crew. A Mighty Heart screens for the press Monday as well – will be heading there and then the press conference immediately afterwards…keep you posted.

Don’t forget to scroll down, catch up on articles you may have missed. I updated on Saturday as well.

All Time

Said it before and I’ll say it again – he is not on the Freebie Five because one night would never do. One night with Johnny Depp…only one night… are you crazy??? No no… Johnny deserves An All Time standing. Johnny Depp is All Time. And check him out at the Pirates premiere last night Disneyland. Full Story

A Great Title

We Own the Night, Joaquin Phoenix’s latest with Mark Wahlberg, in competition here at Cannes although neither is expected – at press time – to attend in support. The screening in on Wednesday and the press conference Thursday – will let you know. Here’s a smutty detail though: Marky supposedly wanted to fly in for a couple of days but rumour has it he demanded to stay at the Hotel du Cap… and the studio told him to beat it. Full Story

When the pout works

Lainey Posted by Lainey at May 20, 2007 00:00:00 May 20, 2007 00:00:00

The perma-pout is cloying…especially on a carpet. But if it belongs anywhere, it definitely belongs in Vogue. And so here is Keira Knightley, in one of the magazine’s most glorious photo shoots of the year, rockin’ that pout like nobody’s business, and looking appropriately morose and depressed…characteristic of all top models. Full Story

Demi Footwear

Demi at the Chanel Cruise Show the other night. And look at those shoes. Must have those shoes. Also a good example of how unreliable bump watch always is: you will recall she was so totally pregnant a couple of months ago after wearing a billowy dress and an overcoat. But if she really was expecting back then, wouldn’t it be much more obvious? And still… now that she’s stepping out yet again in something loose, no doubt the speculation will begin anew. Full Story

A Clinic in Golddiggery

New photos of Paul McCartney and the greedy Heather leaving a restaurant with Bea, clearly getting on much better than they have in ages. The new civilised relations stem from what’s being reported as a truce – that they’ve come to terms on their acrimonious divorce so as to avoid any more stress handed down to their young daughter. Full Story

Going Senile?

Candy Spelling must be losing her sh-t...How else can you explain the open letters sent to Paris Hilton and now Joe Francis? And seriously…who the hell is Joe Francis? Why would Joe Francis merit any of her time? Why would Joe Francis who has made his millions getting college girls to take their tops off be important enough for her to expend any energy scolding him through TMZ? Must be all those dolls in that legendary doll room up in the Spelling mansion – anyone with that many dolls has to be batsh-t crazy. Full Story

Dear Gossips,

A kinder, gentler Michael Moore? He is without a doubt one of the savviest self promoters in the business, and in combination with Harvey Weinstein, Moore’s strategy to promote his latest documentary Sicko has so far been the talk of the Cannes Film Festival. The Palais was packed today…more packed than I’ve seen it and probably the most packed it will be until the arrival of the Pitt crew.

Sicko is an exposé of the American Health Care System, questioning the merits of a program that is leaving almost 50 million Americans without insurance and comparing the program in the US to what he contends is the superiority of others – namely Canada, France, and England.

I attended the screening and the press conference today – he was challenged, he was applauded, he was ridiculed and while I don’t always agree on his arguments or his presentation of what he calls his facts, I will say that the man is endlessly fascinating and even more so now, as his approach this time appears to be less vitriolic and less confrontational – in the film at least – than in the past.

As for Sicko itself? Of all the Moore productions, although at times typically absurd the way Michael Moore can be typically absurd, this is the one that personally resonated the most. My mother had a kidney transplant - have been wondering all day if we would have had to trade our house for it if we had lived elsewhere.

Sicko opens June 29th. Worth checking out – controversial and compelling and crazy and comical too.

Spoke to Jessica Simpson last night as well. If you can believe it, I actually have nice things to say. Getting ready for more weekend wildness from Cannes. Check back often for new posts below and tomorrow too.

PS. Leo is here. And he looked un-f*cking-believable today in his suit, even in the sweltering sun. Time to bump him back up to #1 on the Freebie Five I think. But he might have to fight Javier Bardem for it. Lost my sh-t when I saw him pull up the photo call, will be on the town tonight, keep you posted if there’s any smut.

Shonda Under Fire?

Lainey Posted by Lainey at May 19, 2007 00:00:00 May 19, 2007 00:00:00

Sometimes no comment is more telling than a comment. TR Knight in The Advocate in an interview about the past year, about coming out, about the gay-cist fiasco with Isaiah Washington, and the kind of support he did and didn’t receive from those around him…all this on the heels of what I’m told was a pretty lame Grey’s Anatomy season finale – SPOILER ALERT! A sister for Meredith coming to Seattle Grace and setting up a Grey’s Triangle? Weak, non? More interesting though – what will happen to Preston Burke. Full Story

Postcards from Cannes

Just a taste of what it’s like: Dylan and I were at the satellite truck the other day feeding our footage back to Toronto. Some fashion photographer comes by with this girl – of course she’s a model - he’s taking high quality magazine shots of her at the festival at the most random places. Full Story
