O had some big smiles on last night, and why not, at first? She was going to see her film recognized for its achievements, even if the academy considered them perhaps smaller than she did, and frankly, she was going to go be Oprah in public, which is something she loves.   Everything was fine until Neil Patrick Harris made a crack about how Oprah is the equivalent of the box office revenue of American Sniper. Full Story

Three years in a row now. And he’s working with David O Russell and Jennifer Lawrence again on Joy, which is currently in production. Joy is supposed to open on Christmas Day. That means they think it has awards potential. So Bradley Cooper could be back for a fourth consecutive nomination. Sometimes I have a really hard time believing this. Full Story

I did not see that coming from Patricia Arquette. I thought that, if she made a ‘statement’ in her speech, which we all knew she was going to get to do, that it would be about women, and how it’s hard to be a mother, and respecting the quiet people in your life – akin to what Simmons said, and to what Arquette has said in past interviews. Full Story

Chris Evans: the Oscar not a date date

I happened to have my eye on the arrivals car camera when Chris Evans got there last night. The way he got out of the SUV and sauntered onto the carpet, with all kinds of cocky swagger, like he was rolling up to the bar with his boys on a night out… It did something to me. Which was a surprise because Chris Evans doesn’t normally do things to me. Full Story

OOOF. You know when a night does not go the way you planned? Like you never imagine that on the night of the prom you’ll break your ankle or get pinkeye or have a breakup on your birthday? That’s what happened to Dakota Johnson, who looked smoking hot but whose amazing red dress will become a footnote in her own story. Full Story

Benedict’s Oscar kisses

Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter hit up the Vanity Fair party after the show. And maybe the photographer there asked for a kiss. And maybe Benedict obliged. And decided he would kiss AND close his eyes at the same time. Not a move I generally endorse. This is doesn’t qualify as an exception either. Full Story

If you’re going to be a culture vulture you’re going to get tired. It’s an occupational hazard. Seasons are long, the same people promote the same projects forever so you feel like they don’t give you a chance to miss them…and you get jaded. Or I do. I roll my eyes. I feel like it’s impossible to be surprised. Full Story

Amy Adams in blue (again) at Vanity Fair

Don't cry for Amy Adams and her also-ran Best Actress awards campaign for Big Eyes. She's not upset about it. If anything, she — like always — is a good sport. One of the best sports, even. The five-time Oscar nominee (who earned three nods in four years!) didn't get a ticket to the Oscars this year as a nominee, or as a guest, so Amy hit up the Vanity Fair party with her fiance Darren Le Gallo instead. Full Story

Best Director is a major award. It comes near the end. And we all know how it works by now. Normally they ask the legends, the big time big name big deal stars to present. Ben Affleck. Has two Oscars: for writing and for producing Argo. NOT for directing Argo though. That was his snub year. Full Story

It’s almost like you can write the script yourself by now, right? Kerry Washington will show up probably perfectly on time.  Her dress will be in a shade of pink or purple or mauve. This time it was champagne blush that had her join ranks with Zoe Saldana and Viola Davis to create a colour spectrum. Full Story

Sort of. There are some people who show up to the Vanity Fair Oscar party every year, doesn’t matter if they’ve been to the main show or now. Diane Kruger. If you can get an invitation, you go. Because then everyone knows you got an invitation and there’s always work to be done. Full Story
