I got the Twitter urging early and often to go look at Lizzy Caplan’s dress. It’s gorgeous, yes. Particularly from the side, where you can see the litheness of the body (not a surprise if you’ve been watching the show – I got very, very familiar with her nipples last episode), the grace of the cutouts, and the flow of the white and black. Full Story

Halle Berry: Dusty rose at the Emmys

This is Elie Saab. So it’s not like you’ve never seen it before. There’s a thigh slit and the dusty rose is gorgeous against her skin and she’s gorgeous all over anyway because she’s Halle Berry and it’s never really a loss when it’s Halle Berry but I’m not punching myself in the face over the shoes and, to be honest, I could do without that tacky jewel in the middle of the belt and still, that’s kind of like saying you went to heaven and the marshmallows were too sweet so I’ll just shut up now and let you admire this but not before I leave you with one question: If Julia Roberts had wanted to present the final award of the night instead of hanging out with the men of Best Actor, where would they have put Halle Berry? Full Story

Allison Janney: Best Killing It at the Emmys

At the risk of being gross and fangirly, come on now with the Allison Janney. She’s the best, and you know it. She wore a velvet dress and you have not seen one in years but you bought it on her without question. She spoke happily about being a mother and grandmother onscreen and you know she means it. Full Story

Do you want to be Scarlett Johansson or Blake Lively?

This is the style question I would like to ask Kristen Wiig. And this is the discussion we’ve had about her before: the way she sees herself and therefore the way she dresses herself. At the Emmys last night, it looks like she couldn’t decide between Ryan Reynolds’s blonde lovers but not Alanis Morissette which is probably where I’d want to see her live…and that’s …well…it’s unfair, isn’t it? It’s unfair because she ostensibly knows herself more than I know her soooooo…why is it that it never looks right? To me, Wiig doesn’t sit on the Scarjo and Blake Lively side of the fashion spectrum. Full Story

Julia Louis-Dreyfus: Best Emmys Acceptance, Again

The thing with JLD is she doesn’t pretend she’s not excellent. You know like at a sleepover when you’re 12, and some girl asks another “Truth or dare…(truth, these kinds of girls always pick truth) …what’s it like being so pretty? Like you’re so pretty. Full Story

Anna Gunn: Emmys Worst Extensions

Sh-t. There was a lot of bad hair last night. A deserving win for Anna Gunn, no doubt. A deserving sweep for Breaking Bad, certainly. The bottom half of this dress annoys me though. I just wish it wouldn’t. Why couldn’t it have stayed the same? Imagine all that beaded pretty all the way down? And these extensions. Full Story

Kerry Washington: Worst Emmys Showgirl

It’s not arbitrary, of course. Kerry Washington didn’t just choose the orange because she liked it, or as an homage to Orange Is The New Black, or whatever. She chose it, I assume, as she often does, to counteract all the white and grey and beige that is her (gorgeous, cashmere-filled) lot on Scandal. Full Story

Julianna Margulies: Harsh Hair at the Emmys

I get it that she was going for something severe. I enjoy severe on her. You know what though? At these events, for her, it’s almost always severe. In fact, I can’t even remember seeing her with her hair down, loose. Not in a long time. Is it because she’s differentiating from the character? Alicia is less severe with her look, sure. Full Story

In Defense Of Zooey’s Emmys Hair

I landed in New York this morning and it affected my Emmy experience in two ways. One, I got to watch all the American commercials which really do seem more …commercial, somehow…and two, I was SO HOT during. There’s humidity here like there hasn’t been all summer. So I realized, maybe in the moment as I watched Zooey Deschanel’s hairdo that, that it was likely not a style choice, per se, but a leaning into what was already happening. Full Story

January Jones: Emmys Worst Fringe

It’s stringy, it’s brassy…and I just, I just don’t know what else she would do with it. The way it’s twisted back on both sides like that, the only option was to leave the fringe down because otherwise, if she’d have pushed it back, it’s too much sister-wife-ing so…maybe it would have been better to just leave it all down and have it blunt bobbed across the chin? That’s the decision I would have made. Full Story

What’s the middle ground at an award show between not knowing anyone and having to see the same people over and over again? Well. The Golden Globes. And the Oscars. You still get the familiarity, but the films are fresh, the characters are different, it’s not just Modern Family over and over and over again. Full Story
