A small movie, uncomfortable perhaps at times, for which Peter O’Toole received yet another Oscar nomination losing out eventually to Forest Whitaker.

He doesn"t have one and Hilary Swank has two???

Sorry, I digress. About Venus. He lost the Oscar and yet, in spite of what the MiniVan Majority might call the “icky moments”, which really aren’t that icky anyway, I adored this movie. Peter O’Toole is a feisty master, and watching him own this role at the very end of his career – my bitch was temporarily put on hold. A cold smutty heart thawed out just a little. Said Rolling Stone: O"Toole gives a staggering performance -- fearless, defiantly untamed and in its own way a work of art.

And then Venus belongs to O"Toole. This is, hands down, my favorite performance of the year, largely because I love the way O"Toole (and the filmmakers) refuse to yield to the all-too-pervasive idea that it"s "icky" for old people to even think about sex.

I have 5 copies to give away. If you are interested, send an email to with VENUS as the title. One condition, super easy: will the Beckhams last the year?

I say yes…you?

Entry must be received by Friday, June 1st at noon PST. Winners selected randomly, winners contacted by Sunday June 3rd. Good luck!

Venus Official Synopsis:
Academy Award nominee Peter O’Toole leads a powerful cast to deliver a charming and poignant portrayal of Maurice, an aging veteran actor who becomes absolutely taken with Jessie – the grandniece of his closest friend. When Maurice tries to soften the petulant and provincial young girl with the benefit of his wisdom and London culture, their give-and-take surprises both Maurice and Jessie as they discover what they don’t know about themselves. Featuring brilliant performances from a super supporting cast, Venus is a witty and wise celebration of how the greatest lessons in life can come from the most unlikely places.
