The word from both their reps is that they have not broken up. Which means they want you to think that they are still together…

So why the shenanigans? It’s an intriguing little gossip story.

Sunday morning People.com breaks the exclusive that Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal are done. Celebrity asslicking People, usually at the beck and call of celebrity publicists, published a story without citing comment from any publicist in this case, referring to a source close to Reese who supposedly said that the relationship was over.

This prompted OTHER outlets to seek an official response. Which came swiftly.

There is no split.

What the what?

I’ve spoken with other magazine sources, usually they’re all sniffing around a story when it’s a story. No one I contacted yesterday was working on this story. It came as a surprise.

Two viable possibilities here:

Could simply be a bad tip. Everyone gets a bad tip now and again, it’s totally understandable. But People is usually so safe about this sh-t. People also has a direct hotline to every star flack in the business. Even on a Sunday, it seems unusual they ran the exclusive without checking first…

Coincidence or conspiracy?

Jake’s new film Brothers opens this coming Friday. So far he’s not participated much in promotion. Could this be his contribution? And will we see some pap shots of the happy couple some time this week just in time for the release?

Wait for it. It’s coming.

But it’s a dangerous game to be playing. She threw her marriage out for public consumption in exchange for an Oscar. It can be argued in Hollywood that an Oscar is worth it. But Jake doesn’t have a lot riding on Brothers. He has much more riding on Prince of Persia which isn’t due until end of May. The timing of this move is all f-cked up. Unless it’s a preemptive strike against something else.

This one’s a tricky bitch. Will keep you posted.
