The second trailer for Black Panther has arrived, to be attached to Thor: Ragnarok, and it gives us a better look at the world of Wakanda, which looks AMAZING. The combo of traditional African art and fashion with the high-tech comic book wizardry of Wakanda is super f*cking cool, and the costumes, in particular, are incredible. Full Story

Most people who came out of Captain America: Civil War wanted more Black Panther. As Sarah keeps repeating, this is what we all want next. And soon. But while there’s a new Thor in production (no one is more excited about the third Thor movie than Tom Hiddleston), the standalone Black Panther doesn’t come out until 2018. Full Story

Yesterday the list of the 2016 class of invitees to join the Academy was released, and it shows follow-through on their promise, after back-to-back years of #OscarsSoWhite controversy, to double membership diversity by 2020. This year they invited an unprecedented 683 members—about ten percent of the pre-existing membership. Full Story

Ryan Coogler was honoured by the American Black Film Festival the other night with the Rising Star Award. The award was presented to him by Octavia Spencer who he directed in Fruitvale Station. People keep saying that Ryan is an emerging talent. I feel like he’s kinda arrived now, non? Have you seen Creed yet? If you haven’t, you don’t have to wait long. Full Story

While Sly Stallone was celebrating his Oscar nomination, his director, Ryan Coogler, who was not recognised by the Academy, was at the AARP Awards as Creed was named Best Intergenerational Movie. How’s that for diversity? He not only gave us a new Rocky, with a black future, but also represented maturity – which is not typically a treasured quality in Hollywood. Full Story

There’s a really great double profile on Ryan Coogler and Michael B Jordan in the new issue of New York Magazine this week. The interview took place just before Christmas. Shanice’s I Love Your Smile is mentioned early on in the piece. So, obviously, I loved every word. What I love most though is how these two want to work, the projects they talk about, and how those projects will not only change the conversation about diversity in film but also begin a new conversation about black film. Full Story

So after the back and forth that involved Ava DuVernay coming and going and Ryan Coogler’s name being in contention and then being not in contention and then being back in contention, it is now official and Ryan Coogler, who is two-for-two as a director with Fruitvale Station and Creed, is directing Marvel’s Black Panther. Full Story
