SAG Nominations 2013
The Screen Actors Guild, often seen as the most accurate of Oscar predictors, has announced its list of nominees. So, what have we learned? SAG loves August: Osage County and The Butler. Both films placed several actors across categories. And Forrest Whitaker edged out Robert Redford. That’s the snub a lot of people are talking about. Joining Whitaker are Chiwetel Ejiofor, Bruce Dern, Tom Hanks, and look, Matthew McConaughey is on his way.
On the actress side, it’s all heavyweights: Blanchett, Bullock, Dench, Streep, and Thompson, every single one of them previous winners. Who’s been left out? Amy Adams. American Hustle did receive acknowledgement for Ensemble cast but Jennifer Lawrence is the only actor from the film singled out individually for Supporting Actress. Can you imagine if Lawrence follows up her Best Actress win with a Best Supporting Actress Oscar? Well, she’s up against Oprah and Julia Roberts. My heart however is with Lupita Nyong’o. The omission on the Supporting Actress list is probably Octavia Spencer. Perhaps Fruitvale was just too small to factor.
As for Supporting Actors…
No Jonah Hill. But that’s not a surprise. The Wolf Of Wall Street did not screen for SAG so if there is a shakeup when the Academy announces, it might be there. But yay for Barkhad Abdi! It’s the most diversity we’ve seen in while during award season, though it would be nice if, at some point, we could have some more of it represented in the Lead Actress category. Like in television. I see you Olivia Pope. I see you.
But where the F-CK is Amy Poehler?!? And goddamn could we please let go of Downton Abbey? Wait. No. I’d rather we ditch The Big Bang Theory instead.
