Red for the red in her ledger
Here’s Scarlett Johansson on the set of Captain American: The Winter Soldier yesterday in LA. This will be the third time she plays Natasha Romanov, Black Widow. As Sarah wrote earlier this month, “The Winter Soldier is all tangled up in the Black Widow’s backstory” and while, unlike Sarah, I don’t speak nerd, I’m guessing it has something to do with all that “red in my ledger” she kept going on about in The Avengers.
As I’ve already mentioned several times, I have watched The Avengers probably close to 20 times now. I watch it every time I’m on a plane and it’s now repeating on the movie channel. Scarjo was so much better in The Avengers than she was in Iron Man 2, obviously, since Iron Man 2 was kinda sh-tty. That credit belongs to Joss Whedon. He gave her depth and a sense of humour and some really great intensity. And she delivered on his material. The expression on her face when she thinks Dr Banner might go Hulk at their first meeting, with her gun pointed at his face, is amazing. And the “Regimes fall every day. I tend not to weep over that, I'm Russian.” line was handled perfectly. I also love her reaction when Tony “brings the party” over to the rest of them. It’s the hitch in her voice -- there’s a raspy quality to it that’s very appealing.
Sarah noted that Scarjo’s career has hit a very strong groove lately. To go from The Avengers to Broadway and back into superhero mode is impressive. After this we’ll see her in a smaller film called Under The Skin, and then she will return again as Black Widow in The Avengers 2 which is already booked for release in 2015.
Scarjo struggled initially after her divorce and it was Ryan Reynolds who came out of that positively on the professional side. Two and a half years later, it’s Scarlett’s career that’s thriving now. For those of you who’ve asked, she really doesn’t need a Career Prospectus.
