“Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.”

You’ve heard this expression before probably many many times, but do you know where it comes from? Don’t cheat. Guess where it comes from. Is your first inclination a self-help chicken soup book?

How about Confucius?!

When I was first taught this quote (in Chinese), it was accompanied by another:

“He who moves the mountain starts with the small stones.”

It’s the second one that often gets missed. Yes, do what you love. But in order to get there, you have to begin at the beginning and at the beginning there’s not a lot of glory.

You know where Cate Blanchett began? She began as an extra! Small stones, see? Then there were some stage parts. And guest spots on tv shows, recurring roles on television series, and supporting roles in movies…and then bigger roles in movies.

And now she’s THE Cate Blanchett, a mountain unto herself, who will likely be nominated – again – for a Best Actress Oscar this year for her work in Blue Jasmine, which is excellent. But then again, when isn’t she excellent? Have you seen Bandits? She was even excellent in Bandits! When you get a chance, watch that movie but just focus on her. And appreciate what she brings to it. Cate Blanchett is never not just good, she’s never not GREAT. Sometimes she’s so great she makes you want to pass out. Like in Notes On A Scandal. Sometimes she’s so great she makes you want to embarrass yourself and jump off the balcony at BAM. Like when she played Blanche Dubois in A Streetcar Named Desire. Sometimes she’s so great you stop asking …why is she in this movie? (Indiana Jones)

It’s not just that she’s reliable. Reliable implies that she shows up, she does the job. Cate Blanchett shows up. And she CRUSHES it. Like… a hole in one on EVERY HOLE. Birdie? Pfft. Eagle? Whatever. A hole in one every.single.time.

American Express Canada asked me to tell you about a great performer because they are passionate about delivering great performances during each service interaction they have with their Cardmembers.  For them, great service IS just like a great performance, only on a different stage. You can expect to experience this great performance as an Amex Cardmember. Visit the American Express Canada Facebook page to get the latest updates, and watch for my next Great Performers segment in the coming weeks.
