Hi Hayley, I am confused regarding body fat percentage and BMI.   How much attention should I pay to the numbers and how accurate are they? I had my reading done at the gym on their new machine (the one you stand on, not the calipers), so I assumed the number would be pretty accurate. Full Article

I receive a lot of emails from readers expressing their battles with staying motivated in their workouts and asking me how they can spice things up and prevent themselves from becoming bored with their exercise routine. I just went through a period in December where I had lost complete focus, which is so unlike me as I have had a weekly exercise plan for the past 15 years. Full Article

Hayley, I'm writing this on behalf of my mom, in the hopes that you can provide some advice that will turn things around for her.  All my life (I'm now 34), I've watched my mom struggle with her weight, going through yo-yo after yo-yo diet in the never ending battle to get to the "perfect" body. Full Article

Hi Hayley! I hope this question doesn't come across as "lazy", because I'm genuinely interested in the answer. What's the basic level of sport/fitness that a person should do on a weekly basis? I'm assuming stuff like HIT, training with weights, etc... are all just the "extra" on top of keeping your body in shape (and I don't mean ripped, just fit) and in good health. Full Article

Smutty Fitness: Muscle weighs more than fat

Hayley Posted by Hayley at February 6, 2014 15:36:03 February 6, 2014 15:36:03

Hi Hayley, I booked a beach vacation that is 9 weeks away.  Three weeks ago, I started a major overhaul of my diet and fitness regime to get ready for a week of fun in the sun (in a bikini!).  I'm using an app where I track calories to stay at about 1200 per day (more if I exercise) and have started running on the treadmill 5 days per week (30 min run. Full Article

Spring is around the corner and what comes with spring is the start of what I like to call the running season. Here in Vancouver we have our annual First Half Marathon in 3 weeks which is followed by countless 5km, 10km (like the Sun Run which brings out nearly 60,000 runners of all shapes, sizes and levels), half and full marathons right until the end of the year. Full Article

Hayley With most of us being so sedentary is muscle atrophy on the rise? How is it reversed? How do you rebuild severely wasted muscle through diet and exercise? What about those people who lose a ton of muscle from starving themselves? How do they gain that back? I'm not talking about any definition, just regular muscle. Full Article

Smutty Fitness: The Perfect Water Bottle

Hayley Posted by Hayley at January 24, 2014 15:11:30 January 24, 2014 15:11:30

Water. It is something our body needs. It keep us hydrated, it helps us think and focus, it helps with weight loss, it helps our bodies rid themselves of toxins, it makes our skin glow and hair shine, keeps our muscles from cramping in our workouts and keeps headaches at bay. If you are not drinking water your body will store it, which means you become bloated and the scale is displaying a higher number than you would like to see. Full Article

Smutty Fitness: Body composition scales

My gym has a digital scale which measures, among other things, body fat and muscle percentage. I'm not driven by the scale, but each January I use its recordings as an assessment and benchmark. I had modest expectations for this year's reading: I increased my gym trips (from 3 to 4-6x/week), lifted heavier weights, completed two distance running clinics and added (admittedly irregular) yoga and Pilates. Full Article

Hayley, In July of last year, after being severely overweight all my life and tipping the scales to the "morbidly obese" side thanks to the BMI calculator (I was 5'1" and 225 pounds, for reference) I decided to finally do something about it and really changed my diet and exercise habits. Full Article
