Hi Hayley! After hearing rave reviews from friends, I have started taking barre classes twice per week.  I am enjoying the challenge and the low-impact workout, but I want to make sure that I am adjusting my other workouts during the week to fit with the classes.  Should I continue doing regular cardio? If I am sore after barre, should I still try to fit in strength training in between classes? Thanks ___ Barre classes are a great addition to your already structured workout but it is important that you continue to focus on the many other aspects of health and wellness. Full Article

Hi Hayley I like to run, and building cute outfits in which to do so - you never know who you're going to bump into, right?  (like the really cute guy walking English sheepdog and no wedding ring etc). My problem is finding equally cute footwear for my over-pronation...why do these shoes have to be so boring?  For all other types there are flashy colours and detailing, and as a deeply devoted shoe girl, I have a hard time dishing out the dash appropriate shoes that have zero zest. Full Article

Hayley, I'm a cliché - I'm getting married in a year and want to get started on trying to tone up my upper body. Can you give me some suggestions for exercises targeting shoulders, chest and back - preferably using free weights? My current workouts include cardio (elliptical or treadmill), walking lunges, and some free-weight arm exercises. Full Article

Because of my newfound love of mountain biking I am constantly injured and covered in bruises. Two months ago I ruptured my quadriceps on my right leg just a few weeks before my race and I am still dealing with a large hematoma on my thigh. Last week, I added to my injuries by damaging the joint capsule of my right knee, causing it to swell up like a balloon and turn a million shades of blue. Full Article

I love your column, and among the many questions I'd like to ask, this one stuck out to me today as I cringed shelling out $$ for yet another lunchtime massage: are there really health benefits to getting regular massages? I practice yoga (vinyasa flow) regularly, and multiple instructors have mentioned massages as part of their health/fitness routine. Full Article

Hi Hayley, My boyfriend and I have been together for years and we both like staying active. However, he likes (and excels) at team sports such as baseball, volleyball and golf, whereas I prefer running and yoga. Sometimes we sign up for events together, like a baseball tourney or a race. The problem is, he is much more competitive than me, as well as physically strong and determined. Full Article

Instant gratification – it is what we are used too these days. Technology has changed the way we live, especially social media and because of this we have become accustomed to the satisfaction of instant results. It seems now that whenever we have to work to achieve something we become frustrated and more often than not we give up if it doesn’t happen right away. Full Article

It’s been straight summertime sunshine for weeks here on the West Coast. One thing that I love about summer is the weekend getaway with girlfriends: packing up the car and leaving the husbands, boyfriends and kids behind (all of which I don’t have) and heading out for some girls-only fun. Full Article

This past weekend I did my last mountain bike race of the season. I have talked about my races a lot and let me be clear here -- I am not actually racing in hopes of winning anything. My only goal is to go out and stay positive and cross the finish line with a smile on my face. My last race, a 67km mountain bike race called the Test of Metal was an amazing experience. Full Article

Smutty Fitness: Recovering from bulimia

July 19, 2013 14:42:59 Posted at July 19, 2013 14:42:59

Hi Hayley, I've been struggling with bulimia for over five years, since I was fifteen, and have recently been trying to recover. I was in treatment for about two minutes, but my school schedule conflicted with the sessions, and dropping out isn't really an option for me. I've been able to stop purging on my own, and haven't done so for about 3 months, however my eating habits are far from ideal, and that, in combination with my body relearning to digest food, has caused me to gain 20 pounds (the equivalent of making a recovering alcoholic bathe in whiskey). Full Article
