This past weekend I did my last mountain bike race of the season. I have talked about my races a lot and let me be clear here -- I am not actually racing in hopes of winning anything. My only goal is to go out and stay positive and cross the finish line with a smile on my face. My last race, a 67km mountain bike race called the Test of Metal was an amazing experience. Full Article

Smutty Fitness: Recovering from bulimia

Hayley Posted by Hayley at July 19, 2013 14:42:59 July 19, 2013 14:42:59

Hi Hayley, I've been struggling with bulimia for over five years, since I was fifteen, and have recently been trying to recover. I was in treatment for about two minutes, but my school schedule conflicted with the sessions, and dropping out isn't really an option for me. I've been able to stop purging on my own, and haven't done so for about 3 months, however my eating habits are far from ideal, and that, in combination with my body relearning to digest food, has caused me to gain 20 pounds (the equivalent of making a recovering alcoholic bathe in whiskey). Full Article

Smutty Fitness: Hayley’s running playlist

Hayley Posted by Hayley at July 16, 2013 19:03:07 July 16, 2013 19:03:07

Hey Hayley! So I'm a new runner - and I read a little while ago the post about Robin Thicke's new song being awesome for running (I agree!) - can you suggest other songs for running? I'm doing 3 races this year - all just 5K, but aiming for a half-marathon next year, and I need some serious oomph when I run solo! Thanks! M :) ___ It is hard to keep updating your running playlist and finding new songs to prevent you from becoming bored not only with your music, but also with your running, is a challenging task. Full Article

Smutty Fitness: Five Finger Shoes

Hayley Posted by Hayley at July 8, 2013 14:17:56 July 8, 2013 14:17:56

Hi Hayley! I have been doing a lot more running this summer and while I do yoga and cross fit to strengthen myself, I am still getting "runner's knee" from overuse. My only solution is cutting running for a few days but I hate the prospect of not being able to run in the beautiful summer weather. Full Article

Stand up paddle-boarding (or SUP’ing as the serious paddlers call it) is probably one of my favourite activities to do in the summer and I am not alone. Celebs like Jennifer Garner, Cameron Diaz, Beyonce, Eva Longoria, Matt Damon, Matthew McConaughey, Robert Pattinson, and Olivia Wilde (attached) have all been paddling on a sunny day. Full Article

Smutty Fitness: Sponge for sweat acne

Hayley Posted by Hayley at June 28, 2013 15:19:57 June 28, 2013 15:19:57

Hayley, I am super new to working out. I've got a good partner and I'm working out about 5-6 days a week. My skin hates me for it. I sweat A LOT, and now I keep breaking out. I have NEVER had back acne or neck acne before, but it is hitting me now. What do you suggest?!? (Besides a good shower, because obviously. Full Article

I receive a lot of emails asking me about exercise and I am constantly helping people make time in their day to do more, especially to work out. Rarely do I ever talk about the importance of relaxing and  making time to shut off once in a while is just as important as making time to exercise. Full Article

Smutty Fitness: The Test Of Metal

Hayley Posted by Hayley at June 19, 2013 15:48:28 June 19, 2013 15:48:28

Challenges: I crave them, I dream about them, and I go after them. I love attempting things that at one point in my life I did not believe to be possible.  When I was 17 I knew one day I wanted to do an Ironman and I knew that I could do it if I worked hard.  Where I lacked confidence was in my ability to do the hard work. Full Article

Smutty Fitness: Running & Chafing

Hi Hayley, I have a rather awkward question. I've been running for a few months now, and always in three quarter length pants. Now that it's heating up outside, I have switched to shorts - a running pair I bought specifically from a specialised shop - and I have wicked chafing on my inner thighs! I'm not a thin girl, and so my thighs rub together and. Full Article

Smutty Fitness: Recovery drinks

Hi Hayley, I'm pretty confused about post-workout recovery drinks. I'm working on losing a significant amount of weight, more than 50 lbs, and focusing on 10 lbs at a time. So far I'm down 12 lbs! I am doing a lot of cardio to focus on fat burning as well as some weights for toning, but I hear varying opinions on recovery drinks. Full Article

I'm a young woman who is relatively new to working out in a gym. I worked previously with a personal trainer, but now I'm on my own. I didn't have this problem when I was with my trainer, but I'm feeling intimidated by all of the guys in the weight room. I don't fear anything specific - I'm just very self-conscious with my 8-pound free weights while the dudes are doing the heavy lifting. Full Article
