Hi Hayley, I've never been athletic in my life, but I'd like to start running.   I can walk all day and I try to get in at least half an hour each day, but I'd like to step up my game.  I have mild arthritis in my knees which has shown improvement since I started walking daily and lost weight, but it's not severe, so I don't think that should deter me. Full Article

Hi, I am in desperate need of your help! Actually I am writing on behalf of my mother as well who is going through the exact same thing but I will use my specifics to give you the general idea… Up until autumn of this year I have always been 120 lbs. However, due to some emotional stuff that seemingly could only be cured by more terrible food, I ended up putting on 15 lbs. Full Article

Hi Hayley, I recently moved to Vancouver (yay!) and am trying to get into running since there are so many beautiful places to run. Even when I was in excellent shape (I used to be a swimmer) I really sucked at running. So I downloaded this "couch to 5k" app which is basically a walk-to-run program, and it is great so far! Here's the catch: I am only 2 weeks in and I am already getting painful shin splints. Full Article

Last week I talked about constipation and the effect it can have on your training as well as what you can do to help alleviate the issue. Click here for a refresher. This week I wanted to talk about the other issue. I am sure I am not alone when I say I have been caught more than once panicking to find a bathroom while out on a run or ride, only to be left squatting behind a bush somewhere. Full Article

Hi Hayley, Over the last few years I have lost about 55 lbs – and have maintained that more or less for about 2 years (I’ve gained and lost the same 5 or 6 lbs). With my upcoming wedding in late August I have bumped up my exercise and nutrition routine with the hopes of losing a few inches and toning up so I look great in my dress. Full Article

I am going to talk about something that Lainey likes to bring up all the time but has never been talked about here on Smutty Fitness.  Poop. As a runner and a cyclist, I understand that what is happening down there is very important and diet can play a major role in how a long training day or race unfolds. Full Article

Hey Hayley! I read your column regularly and decided to ask for your help because I don’t think I can solve this problem by myself.  I am almost 20 years old, and at 5’4 I currently weight 175 pounds, which is terrifying to me.  I have weighted more or less the same for the last couple of years. Full Article

I get asked a lot how to stay in shape while traveling and since spring break is here and I am heading off to London and then Ireland to visit and travel with my best friend, I thought it was the perfect time to share how I prevent those pesky vacation pounds from piling on. My first piece of advice is I do not change who I am or how I live simply because I am on vacation. Full Article

Hi Hayley, I’m going to give you a little background on my body and lifestyle: I am a 25 year old woman, 5’7” around 125lbs. I work at an office, so I try to stay moving outside of work. I walk to and from work daily, which adds up to 40 mins/day, walk (at a brisk pace)or run my dog for an hour every weekday evening, and hike/snowshoe/do other outdoor activities on the weekend. Full Article

Hi Hayley, I am confused regarding body fat percentage and BMI.   How much attention should I pay to the numbers and how accurate are they? I had my reading done at the gym on their new machine (the one you stand on, not the calipers), so I assumed the number would be pretty accurate. Full Article

I receive a lot of emails from readers expressing their battles with staying motivated in their workouts and asking me how they can spice things up and prevent themselves from becoming bored with their exercise routine. I just went through a period in December where I had lost complete focus, which is so unlike me as I have had a weekly exercise plan for the past 15 years. Full Article

Hayley, I'm writing this on behalf of my mom, in the hopes that you can provide some advice that will turn things around for her.  All my life (I'm now 34), I've watched my mom struggle with her weight, going through yo-yo after yo-yo diet in the never ending battle to get to the "perfect" body. Full Article

Hi Hayley! I hope this question doesn't come across as "lazy", because I'm genuinely interested in the answer. What's the basic level of sport/fitness that a person should do on a weekly basis? I'm assuming stuff like HIT, training with weights, etc... are all just the "extra" on top of keeping your body in shape (and I don't mean ripped, just fit) and in good health. Full Article
