Hi Hayley! I have a shoe problem. First some background. I bought a pair of Adidas Duramo running shoes and started training for a 10km in January 2010. I fell in love with races and ran my first half marathon in the fall of that same year. After I completed it I was told by pretty much everyone that those shoes had been worn out and to get a new pair to continue running in. Full Article

Hayley, Ok, so I finally did it. After saying I was going to run a half marathon the last (a lot) of years, I finally signed up for one. It's official now. No backing down. I'm in it for the long haul. The marathon I am running is at the end of April. This might be a good time to mention that I'm terrified! As background, I'm a runner. Full Article

I had the privilege of attending TEDxVancouver on Sunday, where Lainey was one of the presenters.  While we were waiting for Lainey to speak I was lucky enough to hear many other inspirational talks and the one theme that really stuck with me was the need for our society to quit thinking about everything in the short term. Full Article

Hi Hayley, Back in May you wrote a Smutty Fitness article called 10 lbs in 2 Months. There was a line in that article that has stuck with me and has been rattling around in my head ever since, so I'm writing to you to find out more. You said "Health is about being able to have a piece of chocolate cake at a party and enjoy it without feeling guilty or the urge to have 10 pieces of it. Full Article

Hayley, 6 months ago I joined a Crossfit box.  I was looking for a way to get stronger and faster and I found it.  I loved it immediately.  I had never done any Olympic lifting so everything was new to me and I was seeing immediate results.  I was getting so much stronger and while I wasn't losing a lot of weight I was becoming leaner. Full Article

I was out shopping on a break yesterday and as I was dressed in my work attire (which most days consists of running pants, a tank top and a running shirt) so it was pretty easy for the girl at the store to recognize me as an athletic trainer.  When I was paying for my purchase she said to me “I have one question for you. Full Article

Hi Hayley, I LOVE group classes. I can't afford a personal trainer but I like someone telling me what to do, and the energy of working out with others. My question is, how does one know what the best combination of group classes is for optimum cardio and strength training? Like for a schedule like the one I've posted here... Full Article

Hi Hayley I am obese.  I hate that word, but I can't deny it any longer.  I weigh 220lbs and I am 5'5. I’ve been overweight for more than 15 years, I’m 35, and I’m at the highest weight I've ever been.  I have a thousand excuses, but none of them hold water and I can only lie to myself for so long. Full Article

Smutty Fitness: The Balance Board

Hayley Posted by Hayley at October 3, 2012 12:55:10 October 3, 2012 12:55:10

I want to introduce you to the balance board, one of my favourite toys to add to my clients’ training sessions. You might have seen this in your gym, probably sitting in a corner somewhere and covered in dust. Here are five exercises (besides just standing on it and trying to balance) that you can do that will strengthen your core, improve your balance and hip stability and increase your overall body strength. Full Article

Fall is here bringing with it shorter days and darker mornings, less daylight to exercise outdoors and cooler temperatures to exercise in.  In the summer we have to plan our workouts to make sure that we miss the heat (or at least survive in it) but come fall and winter we need to practice different strategies. Full Article

Hi Haley, I am a 23 year old male who stands 5"11 and weighs 160-165 lbs. I don't know what or if there even is a standard weight for my age/height and what that falls into, I certainly know I'm not large by any means. I do however feel "pudgy" compared to my 20 year old self who could eat what he wanted and not feel the repercussions. Full Article
