Here is a quick workout I like to do on the treadmill when I don’t have time for a long workout but I want to burn maximal calories in a very short amount of time, plus work on the shape of my butt.  This is a great set to do on your lunch hour, before you head home from work or you can add it in to whatever you are already doing at the gym. Full Article

Smutty Fitness: 3 weeks to Boston

(Lainey: we’ve heard from many of you who are also training for the Boston Marathon or your own races this spring. Keep sending your messages about your training and stay strong through the final push!) I get asked a lot where my motivation comes from when I train and race: what is it that I think about while I am competing and how do I stay motivated? Most of the time I am focusing on my technique, my pace and sticking to my training and race plan but when I am at a point in a run or a race where I am so tired that I do not know how I can possibly continue I will think about three very influential people that have profoundly affected me. Full Article

Hi Hayley,A few days ago, I was cycling to work in the rain and my bike skidded on a wet surface and pitched me off. I broke the scaphoid in my left wrist and took chunks of skin out of my right forearm and knee. I've always been active, but the level has fluctuated - I walk a lot, ride to work regularly (~20-30km return as I have a few different locations), but then fluctuate in how often/much i run and do weight training (have run several 10k races but never more, though planning a 14k in May and a half marathon in October). Full Article

Excuses….we all have them, every single one of us can come up with a million and one reasons why we “cannot” do something and there are always reasons to give up. But here’s one of my favourite quotes: “Are your excuses more important than your dreams?”And what is a dream? I have had a quote written on a white board in my studio all week and it reads “A dream is a goal with a deadline. Full Article

Smutty Fitness: Plus Size Workout Clothes

Hey Hayley, Ok, so I am a plus size girl. My goal is not to be skinny but healthy. I am also a fashion junky and believe it or not, I'm having problems finding cute work out gear for women my size. No need to say it's a major downer. I'm not a runner (yet) but I'm starting to do the walk/run combination but find that with the workout pants (sweats) I have, they always tend to fall down when I try to speed up. Full Article

Yesterday marked exactly five weeks until April 16th, a day that might just be a regular Monday for most North Americans but for 20,000 people it is the date of the 116th Boston Marathon; it not only represents the beginning of a 26.2 mile journey to the finish line in the center of Boston, Massachusetts, but it represents the hours, days, weeks, months and years leading up to it. Full Article

Last week I wrote about how to fuel your day for a late afternoon/early evening workout. Click here if you missed it. I have since received a lot of emails asking me questions on what to eat if you are working out first thing in the morning. You may have read elsewhere that you should not eat before a morning workout but everyone has their own theories and I always recommend that people have something to eat in the morning before a workout, even if it is something very small. Full Article

Hi Hayley,I've been working out regularly for over a year now and have gotten into a solid routine of going to the gym for about an hour 4-5 days a week. It's been awesome and I've managed to lose a bit over 15 pounds, not to mention being able to fit better in my clothes and feeling so much healthier! My only problem is figuring out what to eat for dinner. Full Article

Hi Hayley, I am currently training for my first-ever half marathon (yay!).  I am 27 years old and I started exercising regularly (5-6 times per week) about 8 months ago.  I have had periods of being active in my life before, but have struggled with disordered eating for most of my adult life - it has made for a difficult relationship with the gym! Training for the half marathon represents a new stage for myself, where I'm trying to focus on exercise for health, fitness, and self care, as opposed to weight loss goals. Full Article

Last week I posted this medicine ball workout which targeted your chest and your triceps. This week’s routine will focus on your glutes, back and biceps.  Here are three of my favourite exercises that help to lengthen your hamstrings, tone your glutes and strengthen your biceps, back, core and improve your balance. Full Article
