Smutty Fitness: what is cardio?

Hayley Posted by Hayley at November 19, 2015 16:59:28 November 19, 2015 16:59:28

Dear Hayley, I've a question about what counts as cardio because, to be perfectly blunt, I hate most "cardio" workouts. I know it's important to my overall health and benefits me in a way weight training doesn't, but I'm so unenthusiastic when I'm slogging away on a treadmill/bike/elliptical that I know the benefit is likely halved. Full Article

Smutty Fitness: a faster 5km

Hayley Posted by Hayley at November 12, 2015 17:19:06 November 12, 2015 17:19:06

Hi Hayley, I just finished my 5th 5k in the past three years and got my best time, 29.39. In my first 5k in 2013, I ran at 34.00 minutes because I got tired and walked. I shaved off time since then but I'm disappointed because I wanted to run faster this time. I train primarily on a treadmill I have at home, while my second child naps and my eldest is in school. Full Article

Smutty Fitness: Mental health is just as important as physical health

Hayley Posted by Hayley at November 6, 2015 20:37:31 November 6, 2015 20:37:31

I am an athlete, and have been my entire life. I have learned that you can push your body through anything. I have learned that pain is just something imaginary, and with a little bit of focus you can make it go away. I have taught myself that it is all mental and you can erase any thought, if you try hard enough. Full Article

Smutty Fitness: First Triathlon

Hayley Posted by Hayley at November 5, 2015 18:11:39 November 5, 2015 18:11:39

Hi, Hayley, I'm thinking about doing my first triathlon next year, and have started swimming/spin classes once a week. I normally run a few times a week as well, and play squash, do yoga, and strength train. Any tips on how I should focus my time? I would say I think my weakest is the biking! I'm nervous about the transitions and just being able to work for that long! Thanks! ___ This brings back memories of my first triathlon. Full Article

Hayley Posted by Hayley at October 29, 2015 17:32:00 October 29, 2015 17:32:00

Hi Hayley, I gave birth to a beautiful baby boy three months ago, and everyone is doing well :). The only issue is I gained a lot of weight during my pregnancy. I've already lost 23 pounds since I came back from the hospital, but I still have 15 to go to be back to my pre-pregnancy weight. Full Article

Hey Hayley! I've always been a class-based person because I love having an instructor and the energy of the group to feed off of. But... I have a tendency to push myself too hard in classes, which led to tendonitis in my shoulder. I went to PT for it and am cleared to exercise and have generally been pain-free for the last few years, but I’m mindful of not pushing myself too hard, especially when it comes to planks/pushups/etc. Full Article

Smutty Fitness: Slow & Steady

Hi Hayley, I'm a little disheartened and confused and I'm hoping you can help. I am very overweight and due to my husband's cancer diagnosis, I decided to change my lifestyle for good in case my young children only have me down the track. It's shocked me into making the change. Full Article

Hi Hayley! I struggle with keeping a fitness routine. Personality-wise, I’m a rather spontaneous person and love travel and adventure and I guess, I’m not the best with routines in general. I’m relatively active. I do some form of water activity like paddle boarding, surfing, or windsurfing at least once a week. Full Article

Hi Hayley, I am a mid-40s woman who has struggled with weight gain since having children (add in: love of wine and good food, very sedentary job and perimenopause for some extra issues). In the last 6 months I have put a lot of effort into increasing my activity level. I do HIIT classes 3-4 times per week. Full Article

Smutty Fitness: exercise rationing

Hayley Posted by Hayley at October 8, 2015 15:32:20 October 8, 2015 15:32:20

Hi Hayley, I have potentially a very basic question for you in regards to what I'm calling "exercise rationing". I often read that you should work out a certain amount of times per week... but does this really matter if all your fitness is done in say, two days of the week as opposed to spreading it out? More specifically, if I do two separate fitness classes on Tuesdays (yoga and spinning) and one activity on the weekend (hiking, cross country skiing, etc. Full Article

Hayley, Getting older has many drawbacks. Once I got on the other side of 55 (I'm now 62) my body started falling apart. I compare it to a car with over 55,000 miles. Every year there is a major maintenance issue. I'm now dealing with mild, medium and severe food allergies. I went to a medical doctor who specializes in food allergies. Full Article
