May 25, 2018 – Smutty Shout-Outs

Bille Nguyen is 25 years old. He was recently diagnosed with a rare type of lymphoma and chemotherapy is not working. His best chance is a stem cell transplant. The problem is that only 20% of Asians requiring a stem cell transplant actually find a match. One of the reasons for that is because in the Asian community, the numbers of people registering is very low which then obviously reduces the chance for any Asian and many ethnic minorities of finding a match.

Cancer, as we know, does not recognise culture. It targets anyone. But there is a cultural barrier that’s in place preventing many from getting the live-saving treatment they need. I am posting this today not only to help Bille but to raise awareness about this situation. Bille’s sisters have encountered pushback from the community and he is running out of time. Please visit Match4Bille for more information and/or watch the video below. There is a swab event in Calgary on June 3 to register donors, in particular Asian donors, not just for Bille but for others who may be in a similar situation. It is SO easy. All you have to do is show up.

This weekend is the 8th Annual StrikeOut Cancer Bowl-a-thon in support of Make-A-Wish Quebec! The bowling party is happening on Sunday, May 27th at Le Centre de Quilles 440. Anthony Pacella has been organising this fundraiser since he was 16 years old, after losing his mother to cancer. He’s an amazing young man now who tirelessly gives back in her memory. To support Anthony and/or for tickets, please email [email protected]
