What will your story be?
Most of you who read this blog know how it came to be. It’s our 10th anniversary this year, OMG!
For those of you who stumbled upon it quite some time later and don’t know the background, I started it as a newsletter after leaving my fundraising job at UBC years ago, writing an email to two colleagues that they ended up forwarding to their friends. That went on for a couple of years and then, in late 2004, a friend offered to build me a blog. Not a lot of people knew the word blog back then. It was a golden age of gossip. Ben and JLO had just broken up. We were about to be assaulted by the love bomb then-known as TomKat. These were the early days of Brange. He bleached his hair. Then he got her pregnant.
Here’s a throwback shot of what the site used to look like.
During the day, I was fundraising for homeless and at-risk youth with Covenant House Vancouver. At night I’d go home and post about Britney and KFed, or Justin Timberlake and Cameron Diaz, the good uncensored smut that the celeb-friendly mags weren’t covering. It was long hours and hard work but it never felt that way. Amazingly, all that gossip opened new doors.
One of those doors was my relationship with Glaceau vitaminwater. vitaminwater has been a loyal supporter of this blog for years, from hydrating gossips at events to touring the Faculty of Celebrity Studies. And it has always been a partnership that I have valued because, among other things, the way in which I started my blog paralleled vitaminwater’s start as a small beverage maker in NYC years ago.
From a small start-up to coolers in more than 20 countries worldwide, that’s the vitaminwater story. And it’s part of mine too, because I’ve been writing the vitaminwater zero labels for the last three years.
My favourite flavour is go-go. C+B+E. The zero calorie mixed berry. Because I talk all day and you know what it’s like to listen to someone who has dry mouth. But in addition to hydration it has some of the vitamins I need to help me feel sharp and energized, since I spend half my day debating too. Bonus? go-go mixes great with vodka.
This past weekend I took part in a workshop hosted by vitaminwater at their downtown Toronto headquarters where we got flowing the creative juices of some of the city’s brightest minds.
I shared the floor with Michele Romanow of Dragons' Den, Devon Brooks, founder of Blo Blow Dry Bar and JJ Thompson, owner of Media Needs, among others to (hopefully) inspire someone else’s great idea to take shape.
Do you have an idea that you’d like to set into motion? vitaminwater is running a contest via Instagram to giveaway $10k in start-up funding and professional mentoring with Michele Romanow to help move your idea into action. What will your story be in 10 years? I want to know. Click here for full details.
Good luck and may you THINK+DRINK+DO!
