This week in Zendaya

Zendaya and Celine Dion have the same stylist, Law Roach. So, right now, he’s responsible for dressing the two people giving us the most style porn. That’s his work on show. While Celine’s touring Europe, Zendaya is press touring Spiderman: Homecoming. We’ll get to her clothes in a minute, let’s talk first about her role in the movie. As mentioned last week, her character’s name is Michelle Toomes, daughter of the villain played by Michael Keaton. Which means…she’s not Mary Jane Watson?

Here’s how she answered that question on Good Morning America yesterday – skip to 1:25 if you want to watch just that part:

“I keep trying to tell everybody my name is Michelle in the movie. That is what my name is. I am not lying to you, I swear.”

And later…

“I’m definitely Michelle, I’m not lying.”

Did that ping you?

The way she was so careful to stress that her name is Michelle? That she never says “No” to the question of whether or not she’s Mary Jane? Or am I searching?

If Zendaya’s “Michelle” has nothing to do with Mary Jane, why did they choose another name beginning with the letter “M”? Why not, like, Nicole? Or Olivia? Gabrielle? Danielle?

Michelle isn’t just Michelle. Screenwriters spend time on names. And not just screenwriters who are also The Name Therapist, like Duana. It’s not just about picking their favourite names, it’s about how that name fits the character, or deliberately does NOT fit the character. When Duana’s mulling over a name for one of her scripts, she considers when the person was born, who their parents are, where they grew up, how they feel in their name, how their name informed the way people reacted to them. My point is, again, Michelle wasn’t just chosen arbitrarily. It may not necessarily be because of Mary Jane, but in combination with all the discussion that’s been happening around that character within the story of Spider-Man and the way she’s been answering the question, I wonder if there’s any more here. Or maybe I’m wrong. We’ll find out when Spider-Man opens on July 7. Which means we still have two weeks of Zendaya’s Spider-Man promotional wardrobe.

And, my God, it has been amazing.

You know what I love most about the pink dress she wore on GMA? The biker shorts underneath. Look how badass she is in the black suit over white kicks too. And probably the one that was made to my flavour – the multi-layered, multi-length, off-the-shoulder work of art she wore on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon last night. Come ON.
