The big trend of the night was bright colors, but there was a second, micro-trend happening at the Emmys, and it was “people dressed for a Halloween party”. There was a cohort of people who came in fancy dress fashion, looking like guests at a very expensive Halloween party. I love it! Fashion at events like this tend tends to be very safe, because everyone is trying to make PEOPLE’s best-dressed list the next day, but these four people understood the assignment, and that assignment was “fashion, but make it costume”.
First up is Aidy Bryant in Simone Rocha, looking like she escaped from that village in Midsommar. She is going to sacrifice someone to the old gods! This woman has definitely stuffed a dude into a bear suit and set fire to it!
Next, we have The Crown star and newly minted Emmy winner Josh O’Connor in a suit by Loewe. He looks like an adult man dressing like a little boy going to a wedding! Is Josh O’Connor really just three boys in a suit, pretending to be an adult? I didn’t think so before but now I have my suspicions!
Then there is Ted Lasso star and co-creator Brendan Hunt going full Mr. Monopoly. I don’t know who made this suit, but it looks like he unpacked it from a steamer trunk raised from the Titanic! This man has been to a dinner party where a guest was murdered, and everyone is a suspect, and he might have done it! He’s even working a red-carpet scowl like an 1890s robber baron! Coach Beard is going through some sh-t!
And finally, The Crown’s Emma Corrin in Miu Miu. I call this look the “fashion gremlin”. There are detached sleeves, claw-nails, a SWIM CAP. This look is alienating! This look does not like you or anyone at this boring party! This look ate its food and your food, too!
