Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn: I Didn’t Hate It

I’m not an Amy Schumer apologist or believer. She does her thing, and I’m not invested in it at all. I actively hated the Lemonade parody and I don’t know why Goldie completely skated for that.

So they’re at the Golden Globes presenting, and we are going to be seeing a lot of them leading up to their movie. Amy’s hair looked really good (I like that she left it down) but I didn’t like the sheer fabric between her boobs -- it surprised me that a custom Alexander Wang would use that fabric. It’s so played out, why not just come up with a different neckline?

Goldie looked spectacular. And she knew it. She is 71! And you know what I love about Goldie? That she can out Kate Hudson her own daughter Kate Hudson. When Goldie decides to turn it on, you’re reminded how bright she shines.

So, their bit. I read a few tweets that thought it was the playing on the “dumb blonde woman” stereotype. Goldie was playing, but to me she wasn’t playing dumb. This played like a mother/daughter interaction. This is a very abridged version of the hundreds of little conversations we have with our parents every day/week/month. On how to use a cell phone. On ordering in restaurants (do you order for your parents? I do, and many of my friends do as well). It’s that mix of bemusement and mild irritation and respect – that’s what I saw here.

The gentle way Amy corrects Goldie (which is obviously part of the joke), the way she’s given up on being embarrassed on behalf of her “mom” and just goes with it – their banter does have chemistry. And Goldie’s slyness, her well-honed “bubbly” shtick, plays well with Amy’s dryness. Goldie can hog the good angle and the mic and then be like “oops was I doing that?” and it’s just right.

They were an unexpected bright spot for me. It’s a shame about that awful Lemonade parody.
