The Fifth Estate opens TIFF a week tomorrow. Am kind of curious to see how many of Benedict Cumberbatch’s fans show up at Roy Thomson Hall that night. And what level of Twi-Hard they reach. Like will they be breaking into all the hotels in the vicinity? Will they offer up their babies to him to hold? (This happened with Brad Pitt a few years ago.) Will the gates start heaving as the festival cars pull up the driveway? Last year, they almost buckled when Korean superstar Jang Dong-gun showed up. All week, Hollywood star after Hollywood star, and none of it compared to how intense it was – from the fan perspective – that night.
Cumberbatch has 3 films in the festival: The Fifth Estate (Thursday night), Twelve Years A Slave (Friday night), and August: Osage County (Monday night). That’s a full weekend of Cumberbatch on carpets and at the parties. The best weekend to be a Cumberbatch Twi-Hard living in the Greater Toronto Area.
