Have received many emails from you today asking for thoughts on the trailer for Black Swan starring Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis, directed by Darren Aronofsky, the follow-up to his acclaimed The Wrestler. Black Swan will open the Venice Film Festival, will screen at TIFF too, and is included on many early lists at this point in the season, with forever to go, to be one of the 10 nominations for Best Picture.
But that’s also what they said about The Lovely Bones... which turned out to be bullsh-t. And it started to go downhill for The Lovely Bones after the trailer.
I just don’t love it. I just don’t love how they made it into Single White Female with a shade of Fight Club. I also don’t love Portman’s voiceovers. There’s a little baby breathy SJP happening here that isn’t working for me.
Having said that, it does look great, it’s slick, Vincent Cassel feels perfect, and I’ve heard from 2 people who’ve seen it and they were all over it. Beyond that, we have to wait til December.
