HAVE YOU STARTED WATCHING THIS SHOW YET? It’s easy online. Try it.
The BAFTAs happened on Sunday honouring the best of British television. Misfits won in the drama category last year. There was no repeat but Lauren Socha, aka Kelly, took home Supporting Actress. Yay!
All five original actors were on hand for the event. Seemed to get on quite well despite the fact, as you know, that Robert Sheehan will not be returning. Most of you are quite devastated by this. I get it. This is how you met them, all of them, and now one is gone and will be replaced. But does that mean the show can’t go on? I disagree with those of you lamenting that it will now suck. As I’ve noted before, during liveblogs and on this blog, I was getting tired of Nathan’s antics anyway. At some point, it would have become overkill. Besides, Nathan is comic relief. But he’s not the emotional core of the show. The emotional core(s) of the show is/are Kelly and Simon, future and otherwise. As long as you can keep that, and they have, it’ll all work out. I actually feel really good about this.
As for why Sheehan is leaving, he gave an interview before the BAFTAs and addressed his departure:
"[I decided] well before we finished series two. There's a strange kind of a theme of... There's a few articles I've seen on the internet or whatever about how I've left Misfits to go off and do films and that's all so bullsh-t, that's complete nonsense. I left Misfits to go off and do other stuff, completely unspecific. I just left because a rolling stone gathers no moss, as they say, and I just wanted to piss off and do other things, you know? It's nice that the show's successful but it doesn't mean complete blind and unadmonished loyalty - 'If something is very successful you should stick to it like a barnacle!' That's definitely not my thinking. Yeah (it doesn’t have to be films). If something's good I'll do it down the back of a pub, you know? It doesn't matter if it's on a big cinema screen."
As for all the fans being mad at him:
"Well, they're very internet active, fans of Misfits. Their outcry was probably displayed across the web very dramatically but I think it's only because they're very, very internet friendly. They tweet and Facebook all day long. But yeah, I was flattered by the outrage and the shock. It means they'll miss me! But I'm sure as soon as episode one of series three starts they'll have forgotten all about me because old Joseph Gilgun, who's brilliant and funny and hilarious, is coming in and he's doing a part. He's the fifth member of the gang now."
He goes on to talk about the new guy and about how Nathan will exit. Click here to read the full article.
So he’s young, he’s bored, and while he won’t admit it, he’s ambitious. Let him go. I’m telling you, they will be fine.
