Cate Blanchett won the Critics Award as Best Actress for playing Blanche DuBois in the Sydney Theatre Company’s production of A Streetcar Named Desire yesterday. Big surprise. From Sydney to DC to NYC, if you’ve seen her on stage, you know she practically reinvented the role. As reviewed in the NY Times, it’s like seeing Blanche, hearing Blanche, living Blanche for the first time ever. This is what happens when Cate Blanchett becomes a character. Jacek and I were spoiled last month to have attended her penultimate evening performance at BAM during our trip to New York. Yeah. I’ll gloat. To see an artist of her calibre in full command of her talent – it was the cultural experience of a lifetime.

And don’t you miss her on the carpets?

Cate however prefers life away from Hollywood when she doesn’t have to. Which is why we love her. Here she is after accepting the honour yesterday with her husband, showing off a new warmer, more layered hairstyle. Like it?
