Magic Mike XXL is coming. And that’s actually how they want you to refer to it. Come again. Well I almost came from reading Channing Tatum’s AMA on Reddit last night. Not because he made me horny but because he just made me like him so much, he always makes me like him so much. And this is exceptional because celebrities are just so goddamn unlikeable so often.
It’s not just that he talks about poo, my favourite subject. Or drops f-cks and sh-ts liberally because he’s having real conversation online. And I don’t even mind the praise for Jonah Hill, 2X Oscar nominee and friend of Scorsese, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Brange. Sure, the fact that he calls his dick Gilbert is awesome. But what’s better is the way he casually namechecks his “buddy Pratt” and talks about the wondrous mystery that is now Sandra Bullock’s house – it’s smart, non? It’s smart because as a celebrity, he understands that the gossip bits are important, he’s not fronting like the gossip bits are below him in service of his “craft”. But in a way that isn’t boasty or contrived. In a way that isn’t like when Gwyneth tries to casually work into conversation that Bono was at her dinner party.
Chris Pratt and Channing Tatum, though. Can you imagine that movie?
You can ask Chan about Shia LaBeouf and he’ll tell you that he doesn’t know what the f-ck.
You can ask Chan about Jupiter Ascending and he’ll tell you that he also doesn’t know what the f-ck.
You can ask Chan about Danny DeVito and he’ll tell you that he’ll spin him and then they’ll f-ck.
This is what the AMAs were made for. Random discussions meant to feel as though you’re all a bit drunk, sitting around in a bar, talking nonsense with the occasional moments of seriousness that always end with a fart joke. Or what would you rather?
“Fight a Danny Devito sized John Stamos or a John Stamos sized Danny Devito? You're both naked.”
And then Chan says something like this:
“Doing SNL was by far the most terrifying thing that I've ever done, because there is a lot of reading involved, and I don't read that well out loud.”
Suddenly you’re in love.
Not many people in Hollywood deserve much of anything. But Channing Tatum. He can have it.
