A Filipino lesbian diva! That's what we've got for the first time because Charice, of Glee and singing with Celine Dion fame, has come out of the closet, not only taking a courageous stride to go on the record about her sexuality, but she's also being totally f*cking cute about it.
Charice broke the news to a Filipino radio host named Boy Abunda. While she did not use his name to make a series of gender based puns, as I most certainly would have, she really poured her heart out when he asked her if she is a lesbian. Her words are very eloquent and mature, so I'm just going to let you read her whole response...
“Yes … I am ... I don’t know what the problem is because for me, there is no problem with that. So now I ask for forgiveness from those who don’t understand. And those who cannot accept. I apologize: I understand you. To those who could accept, and who could accept me, thank you very, very much. I just want to say to all of you that I feel very light – that I can leave the house knowing I am not hiding anything….I love myself, that’s why I’m able to do this.”
Now, I don't know if you've come out of the closet and what that was like, but when I did it, it was certainly not this zen. Her first public words about her sexuality are an attempt to understand the bigots who judge her. Mine? "UGH, DEAL WITH IT, MOM!"
Charice is so peaceful about the whole thing. She's the Yoda of coming out of the closet. I guess it's not that surprising given Celine's early affinity for her. I bet Celine could see the wisdom in Charice all along.
The question now is what kind of career will she have? While obviously there are famous lesbian musicians, none of them has ever really been the kind of singer she is. Even better, will she bring lesbian drama into the gossip world? As we talked about earlier, if Girl Sh*t is the best sh-t, Girl On Girl Sh-t has got to be amazing!
