The antithesis of Kate Beckinsale, and perhaps the only bitch with a fighting chance at making a full body denim dress look presentable, this is the inimitable Charlotte Gainsbourg at the Cannes closing last night to present her latest The Tree, directed by Julie Bertuccelli. Last year Charlotte won Best Actress for her work in Antichrist. This year she joined Tim Burton for the presentation of the Palme d’Or to Thai director Apichatpong Weerasethaku for Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives.

As you can see, both at the photo call and on the carpet, Charlotte is the opposite of Try. And therefore so much more chic than most of the rest. Rarely does she have her hair done. Rarely is her make up more than just for daytime - dark eyeliner, maybe. And this of course is a foreign concept for the MiniVan Majority. Hair rollers are the bare minimum requirement for a night out. Which is probably why your garden variety People Magazine reader will toss aside Charlotte Gainsbourg and call her ugly. Or label her a lesbian. Dancing with the Sh-ts finale is tonight. The Bachelorette premieres too. Carry on.

Charlotte is what SJP isn’t courageous enough to be.

Am attaching Charlotte Gainsbourg on Letterman in January, her network debut. A reader called Ritchie recently saw her live in Vancouver, said she was sublime. Also, Charlotte at the Met Gala. In Balenciaga, of course.
