The BBC Music Awards happened the other day. Chris Martin was asked to contribute to a video honouring David Bowie. And he revealed that he wanted to work with Bowie on a song… but that Bowie declined because, well, the song sucked.

"One time I sent him a song to ask him to sing on it. He called me and said, 'It's not one of your best.’ He's got very high standards and I appreciate that. It inspires the rest of us to keep our standards high."

The song that Bowie rejected was not specified. But it could totally be any of the songs on Ghost Stories. Especially Magic. At this point, it’s elevator music. And it’s been that way for a while now.

Good on Martin to be so candid about a legend’s assessment of his work. Definitely. Can you imagine James Franco telling the story the same way? Never. James Franco’s only motivation is James Franco.

Was it motivation for Chris Martin? When David Bowie, THE David Bowie tells you that your sh-t isn’t good enough, how does a Chris Martin bounce back? Does he start questioning everything? Does he become disengaged at home? Have we just been given a clue?

And below – Martin wrote a song for Unbroken which he performed at a screening last week. Then Garrett Hedlund joined him for a sing-along. They would know each other from Gwyneth and Country Strong. Jesus, Garrett is so f-cking hot.

Here is the full performance. Skip to the 10:20 mark for Garrett.

And here are Chris and Garrett from another angle.
