Last year Christoph Waltz was a lock on Best Supporting Actor. This year the category, at least at this stage in the game, appears to belong to Christian Bale with Geoffrey Rush the closest contender. Bale has taken the NBR and he just took the DC Critics. By all accounts Bale’s performance as Dicky Eklund in The Fighter is extraordinary. The film opens this weekend and the premiere was last night.
Bale, usually a reluctant movie star, seemed remarkably jubilant, non? Maybe there is a campaigner in him after all...
As you can see from the trailer, once again it’s a physical transformation, and in a supporting role he pretty much takes it away from Marky Mark Wahlberg in the lead. Marky produced this film so any victory of Bale’s is a victory for him...which kinda feels a little like Girl, Interrupted and Winona Ryder/Angelina Jolie. Does Marky strike you as a sucky pants?
