Depeche Mode announced at a press event in Milan yesterday that there will be a new album called Spirit and a tour kicking off next May that will take them around the world. Which is why teenagers around the world were like, what the f-ck is this Depeche Mode that’s trending on Twitter all day?
I’ve never been a Depeche Mode expert fanatic the way I used to be, say, a Duran Duran fanatic. But, come on, I grew up in the 80s. I know Depeche Mode. But I never did get to see Depeche Mode live back in the day. I think I need to go. For the cheesiest reason ever.
My favourite Depeche Mode song is Somebody. But the live version. You could put me in a coma for 10 years and I’d know every lyric, every pause, every nuance, every time Martin Gore goes high or low (“ten-der-ly), to Somebody (live) without needing to think about it as soon as I woke up. Somebody (live) is on every road trip playlist I’ve ever made. If you pull up beside me on the highway and see me shout-singing in my car, I’m probably shout-singing Somebody. Sometimes I daydream about doing a Somebody (the live version) duet with Justin Bieber on The Social while he plays guitar. That is all you need to know about this fantasy. The point is, I probably need to see Depeche Mode in concert.
