Did you watch Grey Gardens last week? And you watched the original first, right?

As expected, HBO’s Grey Gardens is predicted to contend at the Emmys and then the Golden Globes for awards season and word is there was some behind the scenes posturing regarding nominations and categories pitting Jessica Lange against Drew Barrymore, mother against daughter, like art imitates life. Or vice versa.

In order to avoid a situation in which both actresses would compete head to head, HBO was initially toying with the idea to slot Jessica in the Supporting category, with Drew in the Lead, hoping for a double win. This supposedly did not go over well with Ms Lange, a two time Oscar winner, whose screen time in the film is equal to Drew’s.

With Lange in her category however, Barrymore’s chances are significantly lower. But Mother Darling usually gets her way. Final decision: both performances will be submitted in the Best Actress category.

Big and Little Edie would approve, non?
