Dear Gossips,

The cover of the new issue of The Hollywood Reporter features author Paula Hawkins and Emily Blunt ahead of the premiere of The Girl On The Train. Paula ranks at #19 on THR’s 25 Power Authors list. As you know, The Girl On The Train is one of the most successful books of all time. Film rights were secured before publication in 2014. It was released at the beginning of 2015. And the movie was shot, cut, and ready to hit theatres just a year later. This is an amazing achievement, especially since the story was conceived by a woman about a woman, a woman who is far from perfect, and is expected to be one of the major blockbuster hits of the fall season.

I’m thinking about Kevin Kwan’s Crazy Rich Asians though. The novel came out in 2013, became a bestseller, and the movie is still in development. This summer it was announced that Jon M Chu would be directing and Kevin confirmed in April that the screenplay is done but there’s been no word about casting or a production schedule. Which means there will likely be no Crazy Rich Asians movie expected in 2017. The third and final book in the Crazy Rich Asians series, called Rich People Problems, however, is scheduled for release next summer. And, perhaps, by then Kevin might make the Power Authors list, a list without a single person of colour.

Yours in gossip,

Lainey
