Emma Stone is playing Billie Jean King in a film about the Battle of the Sexes. She’s been training hard, her hair is brown now, and her style has changed too. Pre-Billie Jean Emma was a fashion delicate. Even in a tuxedo she always felt light and wispy. I liked it. But I like this too.
This Emma is, literally, armoured. From the front she looks like she’s carrying a steel backpack. From the side it’s a heavyweight championship belt. And she could take you in the ring, no problem.
It’s not my favourite look of the night. But I do have a lot of affection for it, and for her, because it feels like we’re meeting her again. And now I’m wondering, seeing her like this, could she have been Lara Croft: Tomb Raider?
