Would The Mighty approve?

Gabourey Sidibe was nominated for, like, every award during award season. Oprah saluted her on stage at the Oscars. And she gets invited everywhere now. She hosted SNL. She attended the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Which totally means she’s allowed to be an asshole, a proper card-carrying member of the Hollywood Stupid Generation, right?

Well... maybe not yet. Maybe The Mighty Oprah will call Gabby up on the phone, tell her to sit the f-ck DOWN. Because someone needs to.

It’s a story that was published last week not by Life & Style, not Star Magazine, not by a tabloid or a UK newspaper but by a writer for the Washington Post online, related to Sidibe’s behaviour at the White House dinner when she was rude on multiple occasions to those who approached to admire her. Click here and click here for the specifics.

Naturally, because she’s famous, there are those who’ll find excuses for her sh-tty attitude. She was interrupted. She deserves privacy. She shouldn’t have to be gracious to people who intrude on her time. Sure. Because the White House Correspondents’ Dinner is a low key, low press event? Please. Why else would she have been invited? Sidibe is an intelligent, interesting woman. But she wasn’t there to participate in discussions on foreign policy. She was there, along with a hundred other celebrities, to add flavour to a media party. And as such, in agreeing to attend, there is a song and dance that’s expected. It’s not a family gathering at some hideaway restaurant. So there has to be a better way to rebuff a fan than telling him to come back in 5 minutes. There’s another option to sounding terribly ungrateful when someone tells you your performance was “incandescent”. There’s an alternative to straight up saying no when asked for a photo. Because if you can’t stand to be in public, maybe don’t show up at one of the most public events at the most public venue presided over by the most public civil servant in the nation. Will they know Gabourey Sidibe in 12 months?
