As we wait to see if the actors go on strike—as I am writing this, the final hours of negotiations are ticking down—the Barbie press tour continues. Margot Robbie is in Australia with Greta Gerwig, Issa Rae, and America Ferrera.

We’ve already seen Robbie’s vintage Barbie-inspired fashion on this tour, but today in Sydney, Robbie wore actual vintage—Versace fall/winter 1994/95 that is. She sported a pink cropped turtleneck and metallic mini skirt, along with the heeled loafers featured in the original 1990s look.

This is an excellent deployment of vintage fashion, though I was confused by the sweater for a minute, and everyone wearing coats at the Sydney fan event, and then I remember it’s winter in Australia. It’s burning hot up here in the northern hemisphere, but down there it’s proper sweater weather. Anyway, GREAT look on Margot Robbie, and everyone else, too. I particularly love Issa’s colorful coat (by Stella Jean) and America’s blue pants. I think at least part of the reason we’re all so into this press tour and the fashion is because the “Barbie colors” are such happy colors. Just cheerful, bright colors everywhere.

In other Barbie news, after Tom Cruise and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One director Chris McQuarrie did a little cross-promotion for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and July 21 twins Barbie and Oppenheimer…

Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig returned the favor with a triple bill of their own, of Dead Reckoning, Oppenheimer, and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. (They could choose not waste their time on the latter, but more on that later.)

It’s very cute and fun, but like…do we think they sat through all three movies? I would LOVE it if they did, but that’s a solid day of film viewing. It’s like eight and a half hours of movie. Gerwig and Robbie are on a press tour, they do not have eight and a half hours to spare. I mean, neither does Tom Cruise and Chris McQuarrie, but Cruise is a fanatical watcher of movies. I have no doubt he will eventually get to Indiana Jones and Oppenheimer and Barbie for real, if he didn’t watch them already (if anyone would actually incorporate a day of movie-watching into his press tour, it’s Tom Cruise).

It's very fun to think about Tom Cruise watching Barbie. I was discussing with someone recently whether or not all men are by default a Ken. I don’t think it’s a gender binary, though. Ken energy—“Kenergy”, per Ryan Gosling—is like, clinger energy. It’s wannabe energy. It’s puppy on parade energy. Barbie energy is main character energy. And no one in Hollywood is more of a main character than Tom Cruise. He’s a total Barbie.
