Hailee Steinfeld: Oscars Youthful Folly

This wasn’t one of those ‘young’ years at the Oscars. Of course everyone fell in love with Sunny Pawar (and in my head he got to choose the candy that rained down, and we are kindred because Lemonheads and Mike and Ikes!), but he wasn’t subjected to long, probing interviews and endless repetitions of “now, were you inspired by your costars” the way a kid who’s a little older would be where every single taped piece about the performer has a reverent, wondering line… ‘So and So is only X years old.”

A few years ago, that kid was Hailee Steinfeld. She’s a grown up young woman, of course, but there’s something about this dress that is… not. I know it’s sheer (screw you, slut-shamey headlines that call it ‘nearly naked’), but nothing about it feels all that adult. It feels like an iridescent Lisa Frank drawing. Which is somehow not bad?

I didn’t like the dress on TV but it’s quite stunning in pictures when it’s not competing with every other light ever made. Or maybe it isn’t, and she elevates it. Because is it me or is she the only 20 year old in Hollywood who seems 20? Not 35, not 14, but actually her own real age? How do you get to be that poised and seemingly comfortable with yourself without overdoing it and becoming your own mother’s wise best friend?

In short, I vote she makes a semi-fluorescent dress that reminds me of iridescent bomboniere wrapping ribbon look like it’s elegant. She plays teenagers but doesn’t seem like she’s trying to remain a teenager, or a 35-year-old divorcee. Is she… comfortable with herself? What witchcraft is this?
