Dear Gossips,

Have you read The Book Thief by Markus Zusak? I referenced The Book Thief exactly 3 years ago here in a post arguing in favour of YA – that it’s underrated, that it’s ignorant to dismiss it on the basis of its classification, because otherwise you’d be deprived of a work like The Book Thief, as profound, complex, and insightful as any so-called adult literature, and arguably more accessible.

The Book Thief has become a movie. The first trailer was released yesterday. The film opens in November. So watch the preview and then read the book – you have time. I promise this story will lift you.

And then there’s How I Live Now. I read How I Live Now by Meg Rosoff at the recommendation of Vikki VanSickle, my YA mentor, a few years ago. How I Live Now demonstrates that YA romance can be complicated and satisfyingly UNcheesy. The film stars Saoirse Ronan who’s looking to redeem herself after whatever it was that you’d call The Host. That trailer came out last week. Not…exactly how I pictured it but in a good way. You have time for this one too. Back to school reading!

Yours in gossip,

Lainey
