Dear Gossips,

My ma’s favourite song of all time is Tennessee Waltz. Before they invented karaoke she used to sing it all the time, oh God. Then after they invented karaoke she sang it even more, oh God. I remember hearing it when I was very young, and one day paying closer attention to the lyrics:

I was dancing with my darling to the Tennessee Waltz
When an old friend I happened to see
I introduced her to my loved one and while they were dancing
My friend stole my sweetheart from me

What?

It’s a puffy-cloud name, Patti Page, but she got real when she sang. I Went To Your Wedding is another good example. I almost cried just listening to it again now. My favourite Patti Page song - embedded below - is slightly less depressing...sort of. The conclusion isn’t so despondent, but, really, she had a minute of heaven and has to spend the rest of her life waiting around hoping it might come back to her. Sometimes I have a hard time believing that this is also the same person who sang How Much Is That Doggy.

Yours in gossip,

Lainey
