Dear Gossips,

Was it a great letdown for magazine editors when Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes announced they’d reached a settlement on Monday? At least on Monday this week’s issues hadn’t closed yet. But it was initially looking like the situation would drag out over several weeks, if not months, at least taking us through the slow summer to build momentum for the fall when everything kicks up again.

Covering the media coverage has been almost as interesting as the celebrities themselves. Did they call a meeting in the boardroom at PEOPLE and decide, collectively, which side to be on? Or was there no question that they’d go with Katie like everyone else? Katie Holmes gave everyone a free pass to blow open the Church Of Scientology too. They can’t target and attack just one outlet anymore. Because ALL the outlets are sh-tting on Xenu.

How can we make this last? That’s the question they’re all asking themselves. That’s the question we’re all asking ourselves. Is it gross? Probably yes. But it’s not like Tom and Katie won’t be exploiting the situation either. Without your interest, she can’t open up the next phase of her career. Think of it then as volunteerism rather than voyeurism. We have been recruited.

Much more on Tom and Katie in today’s column, of course.

Yours in gossip,

Lainey
