Dear Gossips,
That Michael Sam package during the ESPYs last night was one of the best award show moments I’ve ever seen. In fact, the production quality of that entire show was top level. I’ve written before about sports doc “producer porn” after watching several of those 30 for 30 films. They’re beautifully shot, tightly edited, and the story doesn’t need any embellishment. Michael Sam’s story is everything.
And Michael Sam showed up to collect his Arthur Ashe Courage Award, in an arena that included a lot of people who didn’t want him, who don’t get him, who think he’s beneath them, proudly holding onto Vito’s hand, proudly kissing him before he went on stage, proudly declaring his love for him while he was accepting his honour.
All I’ve been able to find so far is Sam’s speech but I’ll keep looking for the short film that preceded it because, sports fan or not, it’s worth your time.
