The cover of the new issue of The Hollywood Reporter features the cast of Straight Outta Compton, with Dr Dre and Ice Cube, in advance of the movie release on August 14. Look at this shot of the three young actors (Corey Hawkins, O’Shea Jackson Jr, and Jason Mitchell) playing Dre, Cube, and Eazy-E. That Eazy-E smirk!
The article is a great read – about how long it took to put the film together, about the Suge Knight situation, about how people didn’t think this story would play overseas, and about how F-ck The Police will play in America, now. Again and now.
Donna Langley, head of Universal, also revealed that to promote Straight Outta Compton, they’re working on an NWA reunion tour in Europe, bringing in Eminem, although Dre has since denied that part of the story. The best part of the story, to me, is the video (I’ve embedded it below). O’Shea Jackson Jr is playing his father, Ice Cube. Check out Cube’s expression, his eyes, as he’s listening to his son talk about him. He’s not smiling indulgently. It’s the best “dad” face ever. His level of impatience, always, is terrifying and amazing. Which, as we’ve seen, is what he brings to movies like 21 Jump Street. Ice Cube is constantly about 2 seconds from telling you to f-ck yourself.
