Dear Gossips,
Venus Williams is 35. Serena Williams is 33. They met on Centre Court at Wimbledon yesterday and while it wasn’t a classic match, the significance here is that it might not happen again. The Williams sisters have dominated this sport for almost 20 years. Between them, they hold 27 grand slams – and that number only includes singles titles! It also doesn’t count Olympic gold medals. Also, if you count how many doubles and mixed doubles championships they share, it’s over 50. You cannot overstate their impact and influence. Sometimes though, I feel like people don’t care enough – about how they became who they are in a sport that wasn’t exactly welcoming, and what they fought through: themselves and everyone else. I’ve linked to it before but I’ll never get tired of this article so I’m going to link to it again – in my opinion the best piece ever written on Venus and Serena Williams, by John Jeremiah Sullivan for the New York Times. Click here.
For all that they’ve done, and how much they’ve won, do you think they get enough respect?
Yours in gossip,
Lainey
